Sometimes, I think about watching the “Ice Bowl” between Dallas and Green Bay on an 11” black & white antenna tube tv and how far we have come. Now the question is how far is finally good enough? I think we are getting pretty darn close.
The upscaling for standard resolution, 720p and 1080p streams on the AM9 is quite excellent and is one of the reasons I bought it. Ugoos has just released firmware update v1.2, which fixed quite a few issues, including a blue image problem on multi-screen mode. I have the AM9 and my PS6 connected to my 65”Oled and there is no doubt the AM9 has the better video images.
Thanks for the update, they need to hurry up with the Pro.
Probably too late on the AM9 pro to avoid the tariff. Unless you have to have the 8gbs of RAM for gaming, you probably aren’t going to need it for streaming. The only other advantage will be 128gbs of memory instead of 64gbs, which is more than enough for most.
Yeah, hopefully the tariff situation gets worked out, or they just keep postponing it. I want to try emulation on it so will wait to see how things go. If nothing else there should be some decent coupons/sales around Black Friday to ease the pain.
News flash. Amazon has the AM9 on sale for either $159 or $177 with an $18.00 coupon discount until 9/1. Just passing this on.
I broke down and it will be here tomorrow, I hope you are proud of yourself. I’m blaming you when my wife asks why we have another TV box.![]()
You, (and your significant other), have my deepest sympathy. ![]()
At that price with Amazons delivery speed and return policy and not having to worry about tariffs etc. I couldn’t pass it up.
I’ll go ahead and retire an original edition Onn4k and shuffle the boxes around. The Onn has been an amazing value but lately has been getting very hot and it causes the remote to stop working.
I’ll use this on a TV that I use during the day to watch lots of content that could benefit from upscaling (TCM, classic movies other 720p and 1080p content). Plus, I have almost completely moved away from locked down certified boxes.
ETA: I received my FedEx tracking number 58 minutes after ordering. Not bad at all.
It is really a shame what google has decided to do. The Onn 4K Pro and Plus boxes seemed like very good quality, inexpensive alternatives as streaming devices. Now, after the next year has passed, you are almost forced to go to stock android to future proof and protect your open source streaming options and keep google from sabotaging your “certified” devices. That said, the picture quality options on the AM9, along with stock android o/s make it a better value than the PS6 at about half the price.
Well, it arrived yesterday, and setup went smooth. It showed the update right away and I installed Projectivy, Stremio TiviMate, Sparkle, SmartTube, Tizen Tube and a few utilities like Downloader and began setting preferences etc.
This box is smooth and fast, never even a sign of slowdown or hiccup even when popping in and out of multiple apps. I know the chip benchmarks slower than the s928 in the SK1 but you can’t tell using it, it must be the 64bit OS(or being A14). I haven’t found any problems with any apps that I use.
While I don’t have a Buzz P6, I do have a Buzz X5 SS and this box does produce a noticeably better picture even without the upscaling and video processing options. When the upscaling is turned on it is even more apparent, and I would say it is better than the Shield Pro.
Tivimate of course runs like a dream, it will run a 5 screen multiview smoothly and sometimes 6. With the 6th it is sometimes smooth and sometimes slightly jerky on some of the streams. But with 5 it is rock solid and buttery smooth; I did a 5-hour test with 5 and it went the whole time without a hiccup. Also, during this the box remained at a max of 52°C, while watching a 4k remux it stays around 44°C. The metal boxes run cooler than the new design SK1 which should ensure a long life.
Movies play great and look great also. I still don’t understand why no DV, but I have an Ugoos AM6b+ to play any movie where I think the DV is important enough. All audio codecs are working great.
All in all, I’m very satisfied and for what I’m using this box for I won’t miss any upgrades the Pro model may have. I might still get a Pro to replace another box, or I may wait to see what the future brings from Ugoos. They need a version of this box with 8GB of memory and DV and it would be practically perfect.
Glad the set up went smoothly. The latest update,1.2, got rid of some issues with sideloading some apps. One thing to think about before getting the AM9 Pro…with 4 gbs of RAM, about the only difference you might see with the 8gbs would be on gaming applications. 4 GBs is more than enough for streaming. The true advantage of the AM9 is the video upscaling features, which give it a superior image over the PS6. For that reason alone, I am using this box instead of my PS6 Unlimited. With all the hoopla over Google getting rid of sideloading on their certified boxes by 2027, it is nice to have a quality stock android device like the AM9 that won’t have those problems.
I haven’t run across any bugs at all yet.
I know many would consider it overkill for its’ intended use of IPTV and upscaling content I can’t find in 4k but to me it is definitely worth it.
With the build quality, codec support and running A14, it should have a long useful lifespan.
Hey @sim_bill the P6L plays HDR 10+ with ease and it doesn’t need any upscaling lol. Finding lots of sources with HDR 10 and 10+. Some like DV better but I am super stoked with the quality of 10+. Better than my Shield Pro IMHO.
Yup. The PS6 does very nicely with the HDR10+. I have one also hooked up to my 65” LG Oled along with my AM9. The AM9 gives a better video image, especially with the AI and Amlogic upscaling. I just ordered a spare from Amazon to avoid any problem with impending tariffs. I had several other AM9 purchasers confirm the picture quality to me vs. the PS6, but to each his own. ![]()
Exactly. I use to love the upscaling on the shield pro until I saw what was available without the need to upscale and the options available as well as 64 Bit apps.. Price is also considerably less and certainly will appeal to the masses. Have a good holiday weekend.
Just bought a FORMULER Z11 with IR remote off eBay for $100 with a one year warranty. It works great but definitely has some proprietary launcher and IPTV app. Loving the USB3 with a 256 gig stick added for $20. Runs SPARKLE great. Am mentioning this because some on the thread are looking for a bargain upgrade from the ONN $50 box.
But that damn nice UGOOS AM9 on Amazon for $160 is looking awesome. Talk about future future proof. We want one. Lol.
Does the AM9 have SYSTEM PICKER? Will it reboot (not power down) and still show an NTFS USB stick?
I don’t use those features or options so I don’t know. I only use my AM 9 for streaming IPTV and it is the best video image I have ever experienced from a streaming device. That, apart from Ugoos overall quality, is the only reason I bought it.
This is indeed an excellent IPTV box.
I put it through its paces this weekend with 5 stream multiview running for over 12 hours straight each day and not one hiccup. Usually, I would have to refresh a stream or restart Tivimate on my Shield Pro but it was flawless even when jumping back and forth frequently.
The upscalling is so far the best I have seen on a box and since I watch content that I can’t find in 4k it is a big factor to me.
I setup Kodi also to see how it would perform, and it is indeed smooth and fast. I’m not sure I will use it much on this box since it is mostly for IPTV and YouTube content, but it is nice to have options. As long as it holds up as well as my other Ugoos boxes, it was a bargain.
Some people think I work for Ugoos since I am rather passionate about the brand. I don’t but felt I should share my experiences to those here at Troypoint so they can see what is out there for quality streaming devices other than Google TV, Fire TV, and yes, even Android TV. ![]()
