Ugoos AM9 coming in July

Review video - Playback of different video formats

I really like his reviews and how he goes through each audio/video capability and is very thorough.

Nick is very thorough and objective in his reviews. Another thorough review of the AM9 was done by Android Pimp, with a comparison of current processors on the market. This review convinced me the AM9 was worth buying, as it had the processor and video/sound options I was looking for in a device that is pretty much future proofed.

That video AM9 review is outstanding with benchmarks. Pretty nice to get very high in the rankings with that box. Including a samba server in the box is welcome.

But but but … Would love to find hardware that runs the generic android box 9 OS.

The AM 9 is AOSP.

There are older Ugoos boxes still being sold with Android 9 O/S, such as the AM6 and AM6B Plus. But, the AM9 is simply a better device because of the more advanced processor along with the enhanced video and audio performance, including video upscaling options. The AM9 also runs on the stock (generic) android operating system. For those who want to avoid “certified” google, Fire tv and other devices that will soon be preventing sideloading of unofficial apps, there is nothing that compares with the specs and performance of the AM9, and that includes the PS6 and Nvidia Shield.

The am6b+ is the holy grail for playing all profiles of dolby vision with coreelec installed.

Don’t leave out the SK1 if you’re talking about DV. Also better specs than the AM6 B+.

Sk1 can’t play DV profile 7 FEL. That’s why purists buy the Ugoos am6b+ with CE but the Minix U22XJ Max can achieve the same but harder to get hold of.

Isn’t the minx Google certified ?

As you know I don’t have equipment that can play DV. But when reading up on the AM6 B+ this is what I found.

The Ugoos AM6 Plus is able to process FEL from STDL and DTDL mp4 files: and

Profile 5 STSL mp4

Profile 7 STDL MEL/FEL mkv

Profile 7 STDL MEL/FEL mp4

Profile 7 STDL MEL/FEL ts

Profile 8.1 STSL ts

So does it then depend on the source? Or is the above entirely different? Or is the AM6 Plus way different than B+. Some of this stuff is so confusing. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Apart from the lack of DV, how woukd you compare the AM9 to the AM8 Pro?

Quite a bit better. Especially the Amlogic S905X5 chip, 64 bit enabled, AV1, HDR10 and the Amlogic and AI upscaling, which makes for superb video images on standard, 720 and 1080p sources. This box provides a better video image than the PS6 and Nvidia Shield.

Many thanks for your insight.

Regards

I didnt forget the sk1 it is a lot faster and a better box than the am6b+ but I don’t think it can play dolby vision profile 7 full enhancement layer (fel). If ya need it lol.

Me personally I don’t need it. Im not sure if android boxes going forward will support it.

I’m waiting for the am9 pro then I can be content for a few months before I need another box lol.

Happy streaming @sim_bill

The am8 supports those codec and has Ai upscaling but isn’t running Android 14 64bit OS.

No device running Android OS can play P7 FEL but the conversion to P8.1 using Kodi or Vimu is not bad.

I have a 7 year old Samsung TV. I have no clue what it has or doesn’t have regarding DV, etc. Is it a waste to get a fancy new box if the TV is not able to do what the box is capable of? I know “upscaling” helps but obviously, you don’t want a streaming device that technologically far exceeds the TVs capabilities, do you? Does that make sense? I used to be more well versed in these technologoies but have lost interest over the years.

Samsung can only play HDR up to HDR10+ no Dolby Video. I have a box capable of running both HDR10+ and DV the reason for that is future proofing. With all the hype about Dolby Video I left myself the option of getting a TV that can actually display it in all it’s supposed glory. But I spent a ton of money for my Samsung setup 2 yrs ago, so that won’t happen anytime soon. Unless someone has a 65” new high end TV they aren’t using and want to give away. :hugs: :winking_face_with_tongue:

There are levels of technology need. Generic needs are well served by cheaper devices, or by used older versions. If you are chasing the edge of video compatible capability, and you want to future proof, then you get the new boxes. Warranty coverage no longer matters as a used box can get that from an eBay or Amazon purchase.
