Ugoos AM8 or My next box🤗

@JimmyBarry i dont quite understand what you mean switching back to a different FPS msjes it become choppy.

When i use it on Tivimate, or other apps it is fine.

I agree it plays up occasionally and i raised this on the telegram Ugoos English site with Victor Gu. You are not alone, as someone else had a very long discussion with Victor.

May i suggest you post this on the Telegram site to Victor Gu

Someone called CP has just posted something like your post, almost word for word.

Here is the link:

Have you tried turning off AFR in Tivimate and enable it on your device and check frame rate?

After fighting with the UT8 for a month I’ve decided to send it back to Amazon. I had problems with micro freezing and choppy picture on Kodi and Tivimate. Smart tube had same problem and wouldn’t even play about 50% of the videos I tried. Weyd didn’t work properly. Aspect ratio would spontaneously change, picture would be larger than screen so I had to back out of app and restart to temporarily fix. Tried resetting box and still end up with the same problems. Even with the 8g of ram I couldn’t get this to function as fast and smoothly as the Buzz X5. Also after using the Ugoos for a month and then going back to the X5, there’s no comparison, Buzz has a way clearer picture. Also had to use Ethernet because wifi would not stay connected.

ut8 is rockchip and am8 is amlogic. Amlogic is way better for tv/video imho.

Purchased AM8 on Saturday last week. Still hasn’t shown shipped yet

slow boat from China

Should of paid the extra 15.00 for express shipping :sob:

That wouldn’t have made much of a difference. Mine still took longer than the “express shipping” option stated.

By the way, if you ordered from Ugoos.co, it’s not actually their official site. It’s run by a “friend of the owner” according to someone in Ugoos sales I spoke to. They only really sell direct on some Russian sites, and Ali Express.

Yes.

As part of my testing I kept Tivimate AFR off, Ugoos box AFR on. This is when it develops problems. After a couple of switches between 50 and 60 FPS streams, the picture never really recovers. It becomes very choppy even though the TV is reporting the correct framerate for the stream being shown i.e. TV in 50hz, video at 50FPS. So the device is developing a problem after an arbitrary number of channel changes.

When I turn the Ugoos AFR off and turn it on in Tivimate, there are no problems at all. I can switch all day long and both TV and the app perform exactly as intended.

I could just let the app handle it but I like using a devices in-built AFR because then it controls all your streaming apps with one setting. My nearly 3-year old Buzztv XRS4900 handles this like a dream. Never had a single problem with it on Tivimate, YouTube, Kodi et al. I don’t believe YouTube has an AFR setting anyway, so a faulty AFR is kind of a deal breaker for me.

Just wish Buzztv would release an updated flagship device which takes on the AM8 for power. I heard they are releasing something called the Buzztv Perfectbox early next year which will support 8k video and have 8GB RAM, so will wait and see. Their software/firmware just performs so much better.

Agreed. There has been a long discussion on Telegram about this very issue. Victor Gu suggested that buyers should have been aware that it was obvious that any company ending in (.co) was was not an official site. Oh really! And to add insult to injury, asked if we believed everything online?

He also stated that the site I purchased from was a clever copy of the Official Ugoos site and Ugoos did not have an official Ugoos store.

Strange that at the time there was nothing I could find on their website to show official vendors. It only had “Buyers request” to pre order or request the AM 8. Since then however, they have added
https://ugoos.com/where_to buy

I find it a remarkable coincidence that this site https://ugoos.store (Mini PC TV Box Store) was online before the AM 8 was released. and it only sells Ugoos products. How could they have copied Ugoos official site so quickly? Maybe I don’t live in the real world.

And furthermore, it is remarkably close to the official Ugoos site https://ugoos.com. which is Ugoos-Smart TV Box/ Mini PC Factory

So, one can see how easy it is in our eagerness to buy this new product, that we mis-read something as an official store. Or, did we?

So, to those of you considering this device, please be aware of where to buy from.

Am I advertising on their behalf or supporting this device? Absolutely not…It has many issues which have been discussed on the English Ugoos Telegram channel by many members, and also in the android reddit sub forum, as well as r/ugoos forum.

My own experience is not that great and the worst thing was that there was no button to depress inside the recovery hole. This has now been repaired locally. No thanks to Eugene, Ugoos owner and Victor Gu, with whom I shared the issue and images and they made no effort to help.

Neither did Becky online chat and told me to contact the store where I purchased this from.

And that is where the whole debacle kicked off about “official store”, when I told her that I bought this from your official store. I showed her the invoice, which also had an email; info@ugoos.co.

This went on and on, her telling me that they only had a factory and no online store. The rest of the story is in my writings above, when I posted this to Victor Gu on Telegram.

I saw your post on Reddit in reference to my AFR issue.

My TV is in 50hz because most of the streams I watch are 50 FPS. So I set the box to 50hz by default to avoid needless AFR changes from 60 to 50. My TV supports both - it’s a 1 year old Samsung 4K Neo QLED, their 2022 flagship.

The hardware monitor reports the framerate correctly i.e. it matches the rate of the content being displayed, and my TV reports that it has correctly switched to the right frame rate for the content. The problem is with the device itself. After a number of switches, playback is jittery and the only way to correct it is to reset the device.

When I turn AFR on the box off and let the app handle AFR, in this case Tivimate, it works flawlessly. No jittering, TV set to the correct framerate, playback is smooth as intended.

There is something up with their AFR deployment and no matter which settings I use for AFR (even the defaults after a factory reset) the same problem persists. Tivimate, however, handles it fine. I’d like to think they will look into this but some of the feedback I’ve seen regarding support has not been great.

For now I can just use the AFR setting in Tivimate and Kodi. It works, there aren’t any problems. If I want to use other apps like YouTube or VLC I will need to find a solution because they do not have AFR built in. Or I’ll just wait for the new Buzztv device in Q1 2024. They always seem to get it right.

Many thanks for clarifying this. I wasn’t suggesting you were wrong, merely posing a thought about 50/60hz, and could that be part of the issue.

Yes, i agree there is something not right with their AFR. I have watched several 4k/DV streams on different apps.

And my TV is fully capable and also has 60 hz/120 hz available.

But the hardware monitor shows 4k and doesnt show DV.

I have my box set to adaptive hdr/dv, so it should reflect a change to DV resolution on the hardware monitor.

I have to say that i have not experienced your situation of judder. And hope that Ugoos resolve it.

Regards

Edit: But, i have mine set to 60hz, because i also watch some 60hz programmes.

Hi I would set you TV 50hz or 60hz which ever is your preference and the AM8 to match and turn AFR off as playing 50hz 50fps on a 60hz 60fps is fine as the human will not notice any difference.
Also the same goes for playing 60hz on a 50hz TV.

The only time you will notice an issue is when you play 25fps on a 50hz or 60hz TV.
Mainly on the panning shots you would notice skipped frames.
I personally leave AFR off on the AM8 and do not notice any picture issues on my LG Oled 60hz tv.

Taken from Google

Manufacturers often still specify the old familiar Hertz numbers, which further confuses consumers. However, all TVs whose technical specifications state 50Hz are also designed for 60Hz content. The same applies to 100Hz TVs and 120Hz content. So, if you own a 60Hz TV, the TV signal with 50Hz is reproduced just as well as the 60Hz signal of a connected console.

I also think with AFR turned off the AM8 is upscale the picture using AI upscaling like the shield but I am not totally sure.
In the AFR setting you can choose to change the resolution and frame rate separately.

Thats my take as well. I leave AFR alone (off) and with upscaling the box does the work for you. For instance when I select a stremio movie a pop up will appear informing me the tv(box) has just applied upscaling ans adjusted settings for this movie.

@TXRon Now i am confused. With AFR on and stremio, i get an OSD pop up as the box changes resolution etc.

With AFR off, irrespective of what resolution i choose, it stays at 2160p60hz, which can be accessed by hamburger on the remote and double click. The change doesnt pop up automatically.

Unless i am doing something wrong in settings.

I lied :joy:…errrI think. heres my settings>>> Resolution>switch to best mode. Display 2160 60 hz, framerate buffer 3840X2160. Color= enhanced HDR to SDR (on). Font= 640 dpi (top font slider all the way to left. AFR= switch to best. Fractional freq=off, Send events=off, Frequency switching policy=Double, Delay-0

Only question I have @TXRon is why you would have enhanced HDR to SDR on as HDR is a superior colour range and provides a better picture.

I hate hdr. Makes everything dark and I love brightness.

@TXRon . Ok…that all makes sense.

And dont know why font 640 dpi…all the way to the left, cos that actually makes font smallest dpi.

Miki as best I can tell theres a little play on words. In other words Enhanced Hdr to sdr would be using the ai upscaling(enhanced hdr) on SDR video.
