I will be traveling today and will not be able to respond further till this evening. But would like to pick this up then. Just wanted you to know I will not be ignoring your responses.
If it says app not found then thatâs a sign something is wrong with Kodi itself. If you already have a backup file saved somewhere, clear data and then uninstall Kodi from your device. Install Kodi again from your app store. If it doesnât appear in your app store for whatever reason then use the downloader app and go to kodi.tv/download and click on the Android symbol to download the APK and install. This ensures you are getting the most up to date official version and fixing any bugs you might have had. You might need to go in your settings and allow Downloader permissions to install third party applications first though. After that, go to Settings â Apps â Special app access â All files access. See if you can give Kodi permissions there after you have reinstalled it. I donât have time to test all this for you. Youâll have to do the work.
trust me, Iâve done the work, about 3 days worth. Everything you suggest, Iâve done. Special apps access is toggled on. Uninstalled and re-installed a number of times. You specifically do not have to test. Iâm asking one thing of anyone at this time. That is- on an onn box can the permission to files be allowed. If onn boxes will not let you allow files in kodi permissions then I know itâs the boxes. If it does let you allow the file permissions, then I know its somethine with my set up and I can go from there, thanks.
Alright, I tested it while having my coffee. Onn box 4K with Android 14.
Apps > see all apps > Kodi > permissions > remove permissions and free up space is turned off. Files allow. Microphone allow.
Apps > special app access > all files access > Kodi > On
Apps > Security > scan apps with Play Protect > Off
Used the crew wizard to backup build with GUI and skin settings. Transferred the file to my phone using Send Files to TV. Then did the same to transfer it to the Onn box.
Updated Kodi on the Onn box to v21.3 ARMV7A 32 bit version
Opened Kodi, opened the crew wizard, maintenance, restore local build, hit no when asked if you want to restore Kodi to original state before restoring. Select your backup file.
Worked perfectly fine for me. You must have skipped over a step or not been looking in the correct location for settings.
Ok, thanks, thats what I needed to know, when you went to apps>see all apps>Kodi>permissions>(this is where when I click on âfilesâ the permission options do not open, I get a message that says âapp not foundâ. I know it is nothing to do with my set up because I called my boy in a different state and asked him to open his onn and open kodi>permissions. He clicked on âfilesâ and the same thing happened to him. Kodi is not allowing permission for files. All the toggles are switched to âONâ in special app access etc. I know this is a crutial part of the backup/restore operation. So I remain baffled
You did clear data from Kodi before uninstalling and reinstalling? If you went in special app access and turned on all file access then idk. Maybe try doing a factory reset on the whole device.
Yes, it was a clean install. Ill try that factory reset. If im the only one having the problem then obviously it is something I did wrong. Thanks
Try going to Apps > App Permissions > files and media > Kodi > Allow management of all files
This is different than going to Apps > Kodi > permissions
When I open app permissions my options are Music and audio-Photos and videos-microphone- and other permissions which files and media is not one of the others. There is no files and media option. Iâll let you know how my factory reset goes, thats what Iâm left with because after clicking into the underbelly of this mess, I probably have this whole set up FUBAR.
Factory reset my box and the first thing I did when I got through the set up was to install Kodi. then ONN>settings>apps>kodi>permissions>files> pop up âapp not foundâ. So, I think Iâm done for now.
You just admitted you are still doing it wrong!
You DONâT go Settings> Apps > Kodi!
Go to Settings > Apps > Special App Access
There are settings in more than one place within the apps menu. You have to slow down and read the instructions.
You got this @Tico259

Give a guy some credit. Of course I went to special app access. I donât think you get that I have tried several different ways to do this. I have moved the backup from flashdrive to internal storage (x-plore). When I do this, I can download my backup file into restore and watch every file load. But when I close kodi at the end of the restore install, kodi will not open again, it will open to the the âfirst runâ progress line but instead of opening it will then go back to the kodi app and not open. I know my backup file is completely installed in kodi, but apparently without the permission to open files all the time which it will not let me do. bottom line is that whether is use permission or special access it doesnât work. And, by the way, when you give me instructions to try and it is step by step, I go step by step. Itâs not my fault if it doesnât work. For some reason the onn pro is blocking my kodi permissions.
Okay, letâs recap.
When you are transferring the backup file to the internal storage, what folder are you putting it in? I know for sure it will work in the âdownloadâ folder of internal storage.
Was the backup created using Kodi 21.3? Is the Onn device running 21.3? Did you install it directly from kodi.tv/download or from the app store? If you only did app store then maybe try it from the browser and use the ARM32 version.
Try using the crew wizard if you havenât yet. Make sure you specify the backup folder location before beginning the backup. Save it to the internal storage download folder. Make sure to click yes for all the options. And make sure you get a .zip file when you use the option to backup build (even if you donât have a build just use this option)
After transferring the new backup file to the Onn device and booting up Kodi for the first time, go into the Kodi file manager and try adding the download folder as a source. If you can do that, then Kodi already has permissions and you donât need to continue worrying about that.
When you do the restore, click no when asked if you want to reset Kodi first. And instead of force closing, try just refreshing. See if it properly does the restore that way and then properly close Kodi and reopen it.
- yes, I am using the download folder. 2. Both are running 21.3. 3. Yes, I tried the crew wizard back up, specified the folder location correctly. 4. I was able to transfer the backup file to the internal storage and restore it to the onn box. at this point I have been closing kodi as the pop up box recommends, and when I open kodi again, it does the âfirst runâ load on kodi, but instead of completing the opening of kodi, it immediately goes back to the kodi app. So, I will work on this part and after the back up file is restored and tells me to close kodi, I will follow your instructions and refresh kody instead of closing it. I will use the crew wizard so we are on the same page.
Unfortunately I realize that if you can not duplicate the problem, it is hard to come up with a fix, which is super annoying because I cant be the only one that google is blocking the permissions. But I digress, I will switch to the crew wizard and do the restore again and follow your suggestions from there. What exactly do you mean by refreshing kodi, instead of closing it.
If the restore from zip file is successful it will give you an option if you want to force close Kodi or refresh. Whatever the option says other than force closing, choose that one. Then close Kodi from within the power menu like normal. Thereâs a possibility that force closing is messing up the system file. Unlikely, but possible. If you are even able to get to the page where you can select the restore file then I donât think itâs a file permissions problem at all. Itâs likely how you are doing the backup and restore portion.
Also why I recommended going into your app settings and clearing data before uninstalling. That will get rid of any residual bad data before downloading Kodi again.
got busy and couldnât get back, sorry. To answer your question when the restore is complete, the pop-up does not give options. It says basically close kodi, YES or N0. But I see what you mean, I will choose NO and then power exit the normal way. FYI, I always clear catch before re-opening Kodi. Also, if it doesnât work the first time i am going to do a fresh backup file. I will use the crew wizard this time through the whole process. Good thing I donât have a life.
Clearing cache and clearing data are two different things.
When you create a build backup with the crew wizard you will get 3 files. One is just a .txt and another is for the GUI. You want the 3rd file that is the .zip backup.
Victory is ours!!! Bottom line is, all this time and all the BS, the original backup copy was corrupt. I deleted the original backup from my flashdrive. (To refresh you memory, I had originally installed the backup file for my build from my google tv). installed the new bu file to the same flashdrive, copied it to my internal storage on my pro via x-plore. Using the kodi backup addon, restored the bu file from internal storage. forced closed as per the pop up msg, restarted kodi addon and Walla, my beautiful build was staring me in the face. I havent tested everything but I was able to pullup a show, so I know my debrid service came over, Jayhawks, a special thanks for your persistant, never say die attitude. Side note, the kodi permission>files is still not pulling up the options, but I didnât need to make a change to permissions after all.
