Unlocking the bootloader allowed me to install slimbox properly. Works 100%.
Biggest plus for me is the firmware has the Files app installed which is what I was really hoping for. It allows me to use all the emulators that didn’t work with the stock firmware.
thanks troy for wonderful tutorial. I have a tv box, but the vendor block connecting to the internet except the one they provide including wifi and ethernet, the SoC is Amlogic S905Y4. Can I flash it with Amlogic S905Y4 firmware to byass the restrictions?

Hi Guys, Heads up, it appears Slimbox is emptying its cupboards. I ordered 2 boxes, the X88Pro, which worked lovely, thanks Troy, but the second got held up coming to the UK. It’s a X96 M300 that runs on the S905X5M, same as the X88. Slimbox no longer holds the custom rom’s for these two any more and others. Please check on the Slimbox site for your rom and download it if it is there, if you are waiting a new box to arrive or thinking of tinkering with this tutorial. It was fun while it lasted, Happy New Year All.
Hello, will there be any future videos being made on this project?
Waiting on my cable to show so I can see how much smoke may be in the box.
Thank you.
Hello, probably not. Hopefully that video that I provided gives enough info for people to get started. I was going to do a tutorial on Phoenix for AllWinner CPUs but I only got it to work once and tried a second time for four hours before throwing in the towel. Works much better with Amlogic CPUs which most generic boxes have.
Followed Troys tutorial on how to flash Slimbox Firmware to a x88 pro android box and it worked a treat, took about 6 attempts to flash it across from PC to Box but it worked and the box is now lightning fast. Quite pleased with myself being a noob. Thanks Troy
@TROYPOINT So if I wish to run this X88 Pro X5M just AOSP as it comes out of the box, installing Projectivy on it, then would Slimbox be of any benefit? I see you can install AOSP version, but If using that & rooting it will enable me to use accessibility options &/or enable the microphone to work that google blocks wrongfully in my opinion, then it is of no use to me. I just ordered one of these to build up for my daughter so I do want to figure out if doing the Slimbox gig would be of benefit.
I did the ATV version after doing it once and being very apprehensive about it I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again, just take your time and watch the video and read the notes, good luck
If you’re going to keep using AOSP I don’t think I would bother installing SlimBoxtv. The only reason you might want to do that is 1. If you are in fear that the original firmware has malware…I don’t think it does. 2. You want the added SlimBoxtv features that I show in the video.
@TROYPOINT Thanks a bunch Troy for confirming this. I watched the video & the extras aren’t anything I would care about really, & I agree you on the malware issues of possible malware in firmware not being a problem. This is certainly a great way to get Android TV in to the device for sure & is a great option for those who desire it. Thanks loads for bringing this to all of our attention also as I didn’t know about SlimBOXtv at all.
Hi update on KM 9 and KM3 no Bluetooth available on these boxes when flashed with the correct slimbox firmware. If you open bluetooth in settings and switch to on it only stays in grey not blue as usual. If you try to connect something it won’t work and if you click back to bluetooth settings it is switched off. I have flashed the original firmware supplied by Mecool and all is back to normal now.Other functions did work on Slimbox firmware except bluetooth and remote and accessories missing from the settings menu.
Hello, please watch the video as I go through every single step needed to do this. Hit the pause button on your video player between each step so you don’t miss anything.
I have watched your video. I am questioning how you get downloader by after.news to work on a android box when you are downloading something to windows. I thank you for your time.
