I disagree. On the provider end maybe, but a VPN needs to be used to keep your privacy with your ISP etc. You aren’t going to convince me otherwise, either.

Alright… You made me get into it. If you go into your Real Debrid account settings and make sure your download port is set to “secure” then your ISP cannot see what you are downloading. Everything is encrypted, the same as a VPN. The difference is that your ISP can see that there was some traffic between your IP and Real Debrid. Keep in mind it’s not illegal to stream, just to download. This is also where the benefit of a multihoster comes in because they are the ones actually downloading to their servers.
Now, Real Debrid does keep a log of your activity for up to one year and technically could release it to authorities if ordered to. There is NO WAY AROUND THIS!!! When you sign up for Real Debrid you have to have your VPN off because Real Debrid logs your IP address. This is how they control account sharing and people streaming from multiple locations simultaneously. So, even if you are using a VPN when you stream, your ISP can still see when you went to the website and signed up for an account. That’s all they would need to try to get your account history from RD. So if you weren’t paranoid enough before… you’re welcome now!

I fully respect your knowledge and information. I am aware of the multiple levels and securities that are available in this process. You claim streaming isn’t illegal, but forgot to mention these type of streams aren’t exactly 100% kosher either. There is a gray area there for sure. Regardless of all that you described, Troy recommends using a VPN and I agree 100%. I choose to use it because it is the right decision for me and my family. All I said was, we don’t promote streaming without a VPN in these forums. Just like everything else, it is each persons choice and potential consequences that make the most sense for them.

Completely agree, and I’m not discouraging the use of a VPN. I use IPVanish still myself, but I don’t freak out if I accidentally have it off. Just spreading unbiased knowledge.

Saying you don’t use a VPN is not promoting it. It’s each individual’s decision to decide how and what they stream. We are not in China. we are allowed to offer our differing opinions to what may be mainstream thought. Otherwise it is just censorship

Look man, I know you are just egging on an argument. The point is, there are TONS of newbies that visit here. We dont need them seeing others promoting the opposite of the right thing, and thinking it is the best way. You do whatever the heck you want, believe me I wont lose sleep over it. My mentality is more towards making sure Troy’s newer followers do the right thing, as most arent terribly “techie”. We arent going to argue over this.

“The right thing” is subjective. I believe that’s the point he’s trying to make. What Troypoint does is advise people; not tell them they absolutely have to use a VPN. I’m just trying to say that streaming through real debrid is a hell of a lot safer than torrenting from free sources. And letting people know that it is encrypted in case they didn’t know.
