I remember how that started with the shields years ago. They’re going to try to take away all of our ability to side load. Are we going to go back to flashing hardware with different OS’s again??

Get another one on Amazon. Set it up to run good for you. Pack the other one back up and send it back for refund or credit. Done. If the NEW one does the same or similar as the (supposedly) BAD one, then its highly likely a setup issue instead of a hardware issue. Troubleshooting 101 - Divide and Conquer.
Do you think this will apply to AOSP devices as well as Google Certified boxes?
Eh no biggie. So I might have to wait 24 hours and jump through some hoops to get an app I might want.

edit…fyi… yes this is linux but made for tv and basicaly .apk files are not used here…there are ways…but not out of the box. Stremio and kodi both are native to linux.
It’s a little early to freak out about this, it won’t fully roll out until 2027 by then we will know how ADB installing is restricted, how it effects ATVTools and other utilities.
There is backlash already, Lon on YouTube did a decent video about it too.

I can’t think of one sideloaded apk that I use consistently that wouldn’t go through the fairly simple and cheap ($25?!) process with Google. So if that is true, are we worried over the fact that the “crap apps”(which I don’t even use) may be at risk? This doesn’t seem anything like Amazon’s push to ban sideloading, so I am not going to panic yet. Regardless, great info Ron, and great to have multiple plans for the future.
You know…I was just sitting here thinking about this. Android is open source and google will upset so many people by pulling this that I dont think they will, at least not the way we think. I think they are just going to make it more difficult. But who’s going to stop us from rooting the device and removing google all together? With my ugoos which is already rooted that can be done easy and even without root anyone can disable google and all its services and use another app store. Now newer boxes it might not be the case, but with what we have now… we WIN
With the stremio app, do you have to unload it and reload it if you have it on there and it’s just not acting correctly with the update I know Troy came out with something different and improved and I didn’t know if I had to uninstall it and then reinstall it it is so confusing . Also, somehow one of the grandkids must’ve deleted the unlink and the APK time app so that I can install items on the fire stick. I tried to load them from Troy side on his favorite page and it won’t load , I use the codes that everybody gives me none of them are working. I even use the ones that Troy has on his favorite Page and I can’t get them to work so what am I doing wrong I’ve loaded so many fire sticks over the years but now it’s almost impossible because I wanted to add the norofire as well . It also confusing, please use terminology that a 70 year great grandma can understand. Thank you very much in advance for all your help.
Make sure Play Project has not been turned back on. It needs to be OFF.
If you’re using a Firestick, replace it with another brand, ONN for example but there are many brands to choose from.

As BigDave mentioned above, the Firestick really will only play what is installed on the Stick by Amazon. Pretty much all side-loading will not work, unfortunately.
BigDave also mentioned the ONN products sold through Walmart. This is the most likely replacement for the FireStick. But, Walmart stock is in short supply so finding the ONN devices can be a challenge right now as so many people saw the writing on the wall, so to speak, and bought up a large portion of the available stock. Hopefully you have a Walmart close to you, but you should be able to try on line with the Walmart site.
Wish someone would make a video how to do this apk install using ADB.
