Writers striking, now Hollywood actors are striking

@Miki I’ve read that anyone can live lavishly in Mexico for $1,000 per month. Just depends on who you read and when/where you read it. Having family in LA, $34,000 (after tax dollars) is basic rent money, not food or transportation or anything else to live. At issue is streaming channels like Netflix offering a movie or series everyday 24/7 for years and claiming the video has no residual value to avoid paying the talent is laughable IMO.

That indeed use to be true. It is a different story from just 4 yrs ago. Our 1 bedroom apartment skyrocketed to $1200 dollars a month. Beef 22.50/lb. Margaritas $15 cervezas $6.50 a hamburger $18.00 Gas $8.25/ gallon. and the list goes on. That’s why we had to come back to Canada, we could no longer afford their prices which are increasing every month. $1000/mth was 10 years ago.

Yes, and 10 years ago writers were paid on debuts and residuals. Those contracts still exist and everything has changed except the writers and talent contracts. They are striking to correct for changing times. All they are asking is for management “to sell just one of your yachts so we can live.” Things change in the electronic delivery of information and video very rapidly. Writers are paid on decades old revenue calculations from network TV and theater receipts. Somebody is getting the goldmine and someone else it’s getting the shaft. I support the writers strike! Change has got to come.

Well today its 2-3% of film budget from my research. What they got 10 years ago isn’t what I’m comparing. I also made much more 10 yrs ago and now I’m retired I don’t. The point that seems to have been missed is that while they strike for more wages when already making over $100,000 it’s impossible for the average Joe to sympathize when struggling to pay bills. I’ll leave it at that as I don’t support or sympathize with them at all. I understand your point of view but we’re on opposite sides of the coin.

Taking your number $100k now deduct the required Hollywood fees:
Agent. 10%
Manager 10%
Lawyer 5%
Taxes 25% + 1.5% state

They’re lucky to keep 40 - 60%

The “Average Joe” doesn’t deal with Hollywood bureaucracy

You are right, we’re on different sides of this issue - but you’re still the greatest!

Ya I didn’t count Expenses as we all have those. Licenses, insurance, phone, internet, rent ad nauseum.
and now in Canada we pay tax that ads up to around 66%. Ouch.

Yes, writers have those same expenses, rent, license, insurance plus health insurance on top of agents etc.

All deductible I hope. Like our professional fees.

Deductibles, that puts food on your table? Please make your charitable deductible checks out to Big Dave. Give until it hurts! You’ll be richer for it. :sunglasses:

Removing deductibles sure would put food on my table. I meant exactly the opposite. Deductibles take money out of our pockets. Can’t you use the deductibles you mentioned to lower your tax burden? We can here. Things like your Agent and Manager payouts? That’s what I meant by deductibles.

Of course expenses (deductibles) lower taxable income because they lower your income. Hollywood largess punishes the real producers of content, writers and actors. Agents, talent managers and lawyers don’t add to the value or quality of the content, but are required by management. Who knows, maybe they will go on strike. If the writers ever do go on strike, I’ll sure support that Strike. The writer pods rob ideas for cheap prices. Streaming services negotiate with management, cutting out the talent. Those proceeds, we are told will trickle down. Writers have been tricked on enough.

The writers are already on strike aren’t they? I’m dead set against strikes and will never support them. But that’s me and as I mentioned at the start we’re on opposite sides and that’s just fine. Have a good night.

Another Canadian moderator. Unions have greatly improved life for the Average Wage Earner in USA. We can disagree, but you are not correct by virtue of being moderator. You don’t get the last word by virtue of being moderator and then just dismiss me. I choose to exit this conversation and that’s my last words on the subject.

Who’s a moderator? Not me. I agree Unions had their place a very long time ago. Nobody was dismissing you. I have been clear from the start we’re on opposite sides and that’s ok. I never dismissed you and I’m sorry you’re upset because I do not agree with you, but honestly, what’s wrong with that? No need to be testy. I also will bow out of this as it’s gotten to a point of personal attack. Have a good evening.

We don’t have to go along but we need to get along!

What happened to the last guy who was screaming conspiracies?

Here we go again. Conspiracy theorists and lack of comprehension. Please lets leave this where it belongs, in the manure pile and focus on cord cutting which is what this forum is meant for. The other nonsense only spawns idiotic theories and makes enemies between us instead of a friendly and positive place to discuss our cord cutting hobby. Thank you.
