I am an ex-pat Brit now resident in the US. I like to watch UK as well as US TV but because of the time difference I watch mainly on catch up using the apps for the major UK channels - BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Channel 5 - they are much more convenient to use than a browser. From time time these apps need updating and as they are not in Google’s or Amazon’s US App stores I need to switch my country to the UK to do so. For this reason I continue to use my FS 4KMax because Google restricts the number of times you can switch country per year where Amazon does not. Other app stores carry iPlayer and ITVX but I have never found the others.
Later this year I will be visiting the UK and my intention is to buy an android streamer and load it with the apps while I am there.
I would be grateful if an Insider who is a UK resident and who uses these apps would recommend an android box which runs them successfully. A few years ago before I emigrated I bought a KM6 which would not play ITVX for some licencing reason so this is why I am seeking info on a box that actually works.
Thanks in advance.
For Android devices that support all UK catchup apps you have Google chromecast, Google streamer, Amazon devices and the Shield.
Apple 4k TV on iOS also supports them.
Pretty much what @Avid08 suggested, i use an nvidia shield tv pro in the house and also have a firecube 3. I use a firestick 4k max gen1 in my caravan when travelling the uk and it does me fine.
I know you dont use kodi but i use the catchuptvandmore addon which has itvx and channel 4 in demand which is great as no annoying ad breaks.
I have never been able to get iPlayer or ITVX on AppleTV. How did you do that?
Check out ExpatPrime. It gives live and weeklong catchup of all the major UK channels and works very well.
You can on UK models.
Ah. But then you’ve got to have an alternative power supply (240V vs 110V).
Not sure if this will help. I don’t have or use Apple products.
Thanks. Unfortunately, even with vpn set to uk, I can’t get to the uk App Store. (I’m in Canada).
Apple TV can handle 100-240 V
It will even work in Japan.
You might have to change the region on your Apple ID account to uk.
I know users in the UK that change the region on their Apple ID account to download apps from different regions.
Good to know. I’ll get one next time I’m over there. Thanks.
You should be able to do it with your existing ATV 4k but you will need to change the region on your Apple ID account to uk and use a VPN.
Here is some info for 3rd and 4th gen ATV 4k devices
Best idea would be to find a good UK IPTV service as all UK TV apps are region locked
This might be the device for you - Enjoy live TV, news, sports, movies and TV episodes on thousands of free and paid channels like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney +, ITV Hub, All4, My5, Apple TV+, BT Sport, Prime Video, NOW and many more
You will need a router vpn to use outside UK -
It might be easier to just get a cheap IPTV service and TiviMate or Sparkle. I don’t use catch up but have read **** has lots of UK catch up channels. You can get a year of service for $30-$40 on Alibaba or Z2u. Could also schedule recordings overnight.
Please do not name inverified IPTV services in open forum, it violates the rules.
Sorry about that. Forgot which sub forum I was in.
Just install Kodi 21.2 you watch it all. Best Nvidia Shield Android Box
No idea why you would ask about the best Android box for UK TV, when what you need are the apk’s for the up to date versions. Any decent android box will be good enough for that as long as its not made by Google apparently from what has been said.
A vpn pointing to https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=en_GB takes you to the google play store for uk and App Store - Apple (UK) to the uk store.
You may want to have the vpn on and try downloads from those addresses.
A decent VPN is the key here, given that some channels check the country. BBC iplayer is one such, which works for me in other countries with my account.
You need your account for those App Stores to be set to a specific region to be able to access certain apps Geo-locked to that country.
I don’t think an app like BBC iPlayer will be available in the official US App Stores or any other country for that matter other than the UK.
Also more and more providers are using VPN detection software.
