Good question Jerry. I suspect this is in Miki’s wheelhouse. Hope he answers because I’m clueless. Strange though that you can’t even load SS on the device… Can you get to Downloader and the TP toolbox?
Some of these Onn devices have a region lock. You can bypass this through use of a VPN during initial setup. Just connect to a US server on your VPN and then complete the setup. After that you should be all set.

Seems his issue is not being able to even load his VPN…
It’s all covered in the post I linked to. You can create a US-based VPN Hotspot using a computer, and then connect to it from the Onn device. The Onn will think you’re in the US when following that process, it’ll bypass the region lock, and you proceed with setup from there.
But wont the Walmart boxes have this issue too? Will they be forced to remove apps?
Nobody knows at this point exactly what is going to be the extent of google’s plans .
Are there maybe Chinese boxes that have power and not be easily politically swayed to remove apps? I did just pick up an Onn Pro here in Canada. Plenty in stock here.
All of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) non-certified devices would be exempt from anything like this that Google chooses to do. There’s a list of AOSP devices within this article:
With that being said, there’s still no confirmation that anything will actually change in the end with the Google TV-based devices. Other than users possibly needing to acknowledge that they understand they’re installing a non-certified app, everything could remain as it is now.
Hopefully Google see what’s happened with Amazon and their Fire line. You’re fired.
All onn boxes out of stock online. can find them sometimes in local stores. A walmart employee in electronics explained to me that because the new price hike on the ONN boxes, walmart stopped shipping until current stock is depleted so new stock and inventory count can reflect new price change. Hopefully more shipments coming in next week or two. No word yet on new pro model release date
I can’t find any ONN Streaming boxes, $24.97 anywhere. Did they stop making them?
I managed to get the 4K Pro 2 months ago at walmart for $75 canadian. Now they are $120 at Walmart. Not from resellers either. And still very had to find in store.

Unfortunately, the ONN Google TV devices are geo-restricted during the initial setup process. The biggest problem is that you can’t install a VPN until after setup is completed.
A few things you can try:
• Connect the ONN box to a router that already has Surfshark (or another VPN) configured on it.
• Use a travel router with a VPN connection and connect the ONN to that Wi-Fi during setup.
• Try using a mobile hotspot from a phone that’s connected to a USA VPN through a travel router or VPN-enabled network.
• If you know someone in the US, have them complete the initial setup, then ship it to you.
As far as I know, there’s no easy way to sideload Surfshark before completing the Google TV setup because ADB access isn’t available until the device is activated.
Hopefully someone has found a newer workaround, but a VPN-enabled router is usually the most reliable solution.
