Heads up. Another Onn 4K Pro design flaw may be hiding in plain sight. After installing the Onn 4K Pro and comparing it to the 2023 version 2, I have but one issue with the Pro model: it never turns off… No standby. No shutdown. Just wide open 24/7. Hey Google, turn off… Sorry, I can’t do that. Lol
After having a version 2 box overheat, I discovered there was absolutely no means of venting the heat from the box. Granted, it took 23 hours to overheat in a 76 degree room with lots of air circulating. But it prompted me to open the box and vent it by strategically drilling enough vent holes to release the heat. There was a nice heatsink system inside, but without releasing the hot air - premature chip failure was inevitable if left on for a long enough period of time.
Seems to me the Pro model which is bigger and more powerful has the same problem. Heat only escapes around the connectors on the box. And that’s not by design and surely isn’t enough. Fine for a remote control, but imagine a router, a TV, or a laptop without chassis ventilation.
My fiber optic ONT is not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes, and it is completely vented on three sides. Go figure…
Sorry but i am going to have to disagree on one thing.
The Onn 4k Pro does shut down or at least enters a “sleep state”. I just tested this with my Samsung tv/Onn box.
I turned my tv on by itself (no cable box, Onn or PS4 turned on). I then selected my cable box to power on using the source select option and it did.
I then select the Onn Pro as my souce and I get the message “check that your deice is powered on blah blah…”. I then pressed the power button on the Onn Pro remote and the Onn home screen instantly popped up.
There must be some power going to the Onn Pro in order for the voice recognition to work but it doesnt seem like its always on.
Edit: i also gave the Hey Google Power Off command and it shut down my tv, soundbar and Onn. I did they same test as before and had to power on the Onn with the remote. I could powered it on by voice too.
Good info to know much appreciated, but would like to know exactly where you drilled those holes and how you open the box without damaging. I would like to do the same Two save it from overheating
Gotta say I do. Feel a little ripped off for not getting the back lit. Remote of the new onn pro And having to pay the same Price. That said i’ve returned one box within the return policy period to see if I got lucky and got a backlit remote and was planning to do that repeatedly until I got the legit remote. Just don’t know if it’s worth it or not. Just to get a backlight. And I figure with a backlight. The batteries will probably go faster on the remote. So I think i’m just gonna leave well enough alone. What do you guys think??
I’m not sure that I consider the backlit one an upgrade. I have no issues with the non-backlit one, it is the same as the regular Onn boxes. I have a nice cover on all of them, they work just fine for me.
Was curious about the ONN and if it runs Hot and just checked my ONN 4K Pro that typically runs from early morning until when I go to sleep. Not Hot at all in the slightest. I’ll check the $20 ONN later tonight. typically run them both watching Live TV/Sports through my IPTV app on one and KODI on the other and just toggle between the 2
Yeah my Nvidia gets a lot more use than my onn pro so i couldn’t test it for overheating.
@DeputyDawg29210 didnt technically say they do overheat. Just that it seem the may have the same design flaw that can cause them to. If i understood his post correctly.
Being that it has better processor and storage it may run cooler. But i am not a Techy at all so .
I kept my non-backlit ONN device as well. I have it setup just like my 4K Max firestick. I transferred firestick apps using this app called LocalSend. I must say I’m proud if myself. Lol, TP Insiders are making me dangerous.
@JPM69 Thanks for the eval. I’m resting easy now because I usually run at least one box 20+ hours a day. And much appreciation to everyone else for their insight.
@AMD237 Great Pic… Sorry your box got smoked. But I got lucky and shut it down as soon as it started running erratically. Now I might be overly suspicious, but the fact that Onn forces these boxes to shut down periodically despite the power saver settings raises my eyebrow: is that their attempt to avert overheating issues.

I left the circuit board in place. Then I put a drill bit stop on a 3/32" bit to limit the drill depth and drilled along the side of the bottom case (entire circumference). Taking care not to interfere with the case or circuit board. It’s really a crap shoot, but I didn’t think it needed holes on the top or bottom faces. Good luck community.
Don’t feel ripped off. I have (and hate) the “Free TV” remote. You have to hit a button to turn on the back light which is kinda inane if you ask me.
If you do insist on getting a unit with the back light, look at the date code on the tag that’s on the outside of the box. It should be 4 digit code ie. 24xx indicating the year then the work week. Mine is 2410 and I got the later remote.
Thanx for that heads up. I’ll look in the future if i buy another 1, but fur now I’m good. Got it all set up the way I want. I am waiting to see if that other insider responds to overheat issue he said it has. Said he actually drilled some holes in box to release heat build up that could damage box down the road.
@AMD237 Can you tell me a little more about these power settings and where I find em on the box. I got all the pry tools I need but not familiar with a drill bit stop.
And would it just work to pull the power plug on the box? And plug it in only when I am using it? Have got the box in a spare bedroom. We don’t even use. So we rarely use the TV in there, Unless I am in the doghouse, and my wife keeps me out of the bedroom.
