I never had any framerate black screens on my Shield Pro. This isn’t just a temp black screen, it cycles from the black screen to the app screen and back again continuously. I also don’t use switch refresh rate at all. I also know what the FireOS is based on, installed and programmed hundreds. Stoppsed about a year and a half ago. Tx for your input @Avid08 Have a great day.
I don’t think AFR works correctly on shield as there are lots of subreddits on Reddit that mention the issues with it.
Also auto frame rate was only introduced on Android TV 12
Some apps like Smarttube you can’t disable the match refresh rate on the AFR settings because it doesn’t have separate settings like Tivimate has.
So the displays refresh rate is changed and you will see the black screen for the refresh rate change.
I only see black screen when the refresh is changed to match frame rate.
I also stopped setting up Firestick for people and persuaded them to buy better devices because I disliked the OS and the bloatware they came with.
I agree on the Fire devices. That’s why I stopped setting them up. I have AFR Beta on the Shield Pro and no issues I’ve noticed. i don’t use Smarttube. I never use Youtube either. I have the AFR enabled in the SK1 settings so I assume it is always active. I haven’t seen a setting that uses “Switch frame rate and refresh rate”, only “Switch frame rate and resolution” which I don’t do as my Resolution is adjusted in that sub setting section. Display mode 2160p 60Hz. No matter what device I’ve ever used or configured I have never seen this rotating on/off black screen before or had one that takes upward of a full minute to actually run. I am finished with the SK1 and this discussion as well as there doesn’t seem to be an answer I can find. GL2U
I forgot to mention MovMate in google playstore was the latest app that really messed my SK1 and locked it up, in case someone else wants to test it out.
I have mentioned that I don’t use the Ugoos AFR because it doesn’t work well and prefer to use the apps I use with their AFR which works a lot better.
I am not try to cause you any frustration but just trying help.
I hope you find the solution to your issue.
Oh you aren’t causing me any frustration. It’s just I’m trying to understand what you’re saying. From what I have learned an app cannot adjust the refresh rate which is determined by the TV and measured in Hz. Yes it can alter the frame rate measured in FPS(frames per second) Two different things. So I try to follow your explanations but then have to research what you are saying when it is wildly different from my knowledge. I use the Ugoos AFR as I don’t think that’s the cause of my black screen issue. Just the odd app that it happens in, so trying to find the commonality can be a challenge. Thanks for your “hope”. I’m sure I’ll hit on the cause and solution eventually and then post it if I do. Have yourself a great week @Avid08
No some apps can alter the refresh rate
if the apps has it built in.
The tv is fed the image with frame rate and refresh rate and it will make the switch needed and to match the image.
This will cause a momentary black screen.
For video playback the frame rate and refresh should match for a smoother image when panning or fast moving scenes and to also prevent screen tearing.
Some people are more susceptible to seeing these issues and it can be very noticeable to them and some it doesn’t bother.
The apps I use like Kodi, Syncler, Tivimate, iMPlayer and Smarttube all have AFR and Refresh rate matching and I it use rather than use the Ugoos AFR because I found it didn’t work well and caused playback issues for me.
It is one of the features that doesn’t work well from my experience with it and maybe it will be fixed in a future firmware update.
But it may work well with other apps but with the ones I use I had issues.
I think it worked with Weyd but I no longer use the app.
Again I hope you get to the bottom of the issue and have a great week also.
Thank you for the explanation. Much appreciated. Always something new to learn and especially when it flies in the face of what I know. Again I appreciate your explanation.
FYI I have turned off the AFR in SK1 on your advice.
Again tx.
Apart from changing the animation settings to .5, I left the other settings, including auto settings alone and the SK 1 performs superbly. I have an IPTV streaming service with a large selection of 4K offerings that look absolutely stunning in Dolby Vision with my LG Oled. The video and audio are of noticibly higher quality on my SK 1 than I was getting with my Ugoos AM6B Plus. I’m starting to think that a difference in the picture quality and resolution of streaming sources may play a bigger role in video streams than many of us may care to admit.
I have to agree about video quality that can be had from dedrid services especially remux files.
These are better quality than the offerings from official streaming services which offer compressed images and lossy 5.1 Dolby Atmos files.
I do have an excellent picture and after a lot of configuring the colour is so realistic you’d swear you’re looking out a window instead of watching a screen. Still the colour washout on 4K for my box though. I also only watch the Premiumize sources and in particular x265 HEVC. Still no real explanation on the super scaling and the various settings in that settings section, but it’s been pointed out to me that I should expect lack of info from a small company like Ugoos and also to expect CS to be lacking or non existent. I’ve gone about as far as possible for this device and will be switching back to the Shield Pro this weekend. I’ll dig the SK1 back out of the dust bin when an update comes along.
When you watch 4k HDR content on the SK1 is your TV switching into HDR mode?
What do you have HDR policy set at?
Know the question isn’t directed at me but for extra input here’s my experience. If I choose an HDR file my TV shows it’s playing HDR, if I play a file that has both HDR and Dolby Vision embedded, than both the SK1 and my TV show it’s playing HDR 10+. This is my favorite and the colors definitely don’t look washed out. ![]()
Yes my devices do the same but mine plays Dolby vision because I have an LG tv and it doesn’t support HDR10+ but like Dolby Vision, HDR10+ has dynamic meta data and is usually preferred to standard HDR10 with static meta data.
Some TVS do suffer from a washed out HDR image due to their peak brightness capabilities and I have see many users complain online about it.
My TV is a Samsung and the Tizen OS only plays HDR, so the SK1 is set to Always HDR. I make sure to pick the 4K HDR to play no DV for me. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m going to experiment switching to 422 10 bit and 422 12 bit. What I really would like to know is exactly what the settings under “Display & Sound>Color>Video picture settings>Additional settings>Expert” do exactly.
The policy should be set to adaptive and then the device will switch to the correct colour format for the content you are playing SDR HDR etc.
Then your tv will switch to HDR if you play HDR content or SDR for that content.
Obviously you won’t play DV content because it’s not supported.
But content with DV and HDR colour formats should play in HDR mode and
your tv should recognise this.
Altering chroma sub sampling settings will not fix your issue.
420 10 bit is the standard that I use.
Most tv displays are native 10bit
The expert setting are for altering noise reduction, sharpness and Ai upscaling.
I prefer to use the picture setting on my tv to calibrate the image.
I don’t use the Ai feature because I don’t watch low resolution content.
My tv has Ai features but I don’t use them either. I prefer to watch content how it was intended and not look computer generated.
Just my personal preference but when I set mine to always HDR, that’s when I feel my picture looks dull and washed out, I literally hate always HDR on all devices so always set it to adaptive.
I am the same and prefer watch SDR content as it’s intended to be watched in SDR colour format.
The colour tone mapping is not correct when you watch it in HDR mode.
Ok tx. I will try Adaptive HDR/DV even though that makes no sense as I only choose 4K HDR when available and choosing any source with both HDR and DV inevitably provides me with some weird alien looking color display. Everything but 4K sources have absolutely amazing picture clarity and colour. I still think this has something to do with the AI on this device. I have used YCbCr420 10 bit from the beginning as it’s the best across a wider range of sources. But worth a try. Done.
Some files that are ripped incorrectly and don’t have the correct HDR fallback and will not play correctly on non DV supported TVs.
It’s because you have HDR policy set to always HDR and are viewing all content in HDR mode including SDR content.
This must be having a negative affect on the 4k HDR content you are viewing as mentioned by @PapaS in their earlier post.
I have played with Ai features and they did alter the colour slightly for me and did make lower resolution images sharper.
But as I mentioned I don’t watch low resolution content so I don’t use it.
I have switched to Adaptive HDR/DV and tested 4 different vids. I have been able to adjust the colour to look very good and have turned off the Amlogic super scaling. The 4K HDR play just fine now. All AI is now off as are all Video picture settings and Expert settings. All now off, including the Video picture settings, and that seems to be the best picture oddly enough. Thanks.
