Stremio Cache Settings

Hi. To further my understanding of all things technical, i have a simple question.

In settings, cache, it shows 0 to 10 gb.

Question 1. What is the purpose of this? And what do the dufferent cache sizes actually do, when set to different levels.

Question 2. What is the recommended size, according to viewers experience?

Many thanks.

You can set it to zero if you want. Its basically empty folders of shows youve watched.

@TXRon Thank you. Your link refers to cache being set at zero for large files on devices with little amounts of storage.

My device has 64gb of which i have only used 10gb.

But, i will try it at Zero for a while.

No prob. You would serve yourself well to routinely purge the cache of the whole system. Personally I automate that task. While 64 gigs is great for a device, its rather small in movie terms as it can fill up rather quickly with junk files.

Understand. I use SD maid at the end of every day, to clean the system.

The jury of tech experts seems to be out, as to whether you should purge the system on a daily basis, because it makes loading time of apps etc longer.

But, i have never had any issues.

With today’s tech and programming the impact of clearing a cache affecting app load times is minimal. It might go from say .5ms to .75ms less time than it takes to have a sip of my coffee. Yum. On the otherhand if you have limited Ram then the extra space might be needed to run another RAM intensive app. I’ve honestly not had any app loading issues clearing my cache and doing so several times a day after say an intensive testing session. But for devs or other deep dive techies ms can seem like hours.

Did you change the three windows & transition animation scale settings in Developer options from 1x to .5x ? It will load faster and feel more crisp. I know a Troypoint instruction addressed this somewhere. Just a thought. I also like to use the fast task killer apk every so often. Later

@Miki and @Samsam

Thank you both for your responses.

My loading times are excellent and i also have 4gb ram.
My question was purely a fact finding one to improve my understanding of the app settings, regarding cache.

However, i do have two issues.

  1. Sometimes whilst watching a series, the app will shut down and revert to home screen. Not sure if it is the stream i am using or what. It is so sporadic, that i can not pin it down to anything.

  2. The other issue is, watching series, and then onto the next episode, it displays no streams available and there is a blue buffering circle. Switching to another series or movie, produces the same issue.

This has been discussed on other stremio forums, and the only way i have found to resolve it, is to reboot my device and also clear cache on the app.

I haven’t had this issue, so I can’t honestly say why this is happening to you. I have read where others have had a similar issue and tried a few things. For them it seemed to be an interaction between Stremio and their vpn protocol. If you know how to change protocols you might try different ones and see if one gives you a better experience. Now with the series, again I’ve never had this issue as I usually watch the last available episode, and if I do binge watch a new series I’ve always manually selected the next episode and source. I haven’t tried any autoplay next episode settings. Sorry I can’t be more help.

@Miki Many thanks. I will try a few different vpns and also change my vpn protocol as an experiment.

Have you tried using a different player? I like using KODI as a player with Stremio since it seems to be able to play most anything with little issue on its end. I used to use VLC but it had a few issues with Stremio for some reason. From your buffering it sounds like you might be using MX player or EXO. I also use debrid so little or no buffering for me. I’m not sure if you mentioned if you are using debrid links or not.

My last tip and something I found that works almost every time is uninstall everything on Stremio. Reinstall official Stremio and your add-ons. Be careful when using any non-official add-on. I use Torrentio with debrid and never worry about VPN.

Excellent. As Stremio is heavily torrent sourced I would certainly make sure you always use a VPN to remain anonymous. Let us know how you make out. I’ve never used any player but the native one for Stremio and no issue here. Certainly trying another player is an option but I don’t think the native player would cause such an issue, but as we know with apps and devices, about anything is possible.

Same here, Stremio just works and for me always has. I run sdmaid nightly to keep it all junk free :+1:

I am using the built in player. As i said, it is only occasional, when watching streams and a few episodes. When i try to watch the next episode, having watched a few, i occasionally get " no add ons" and the buffering circle.

But, to clarify, i never get buffering during the play of a stream.
And i use All Debrid. And even with AD streams, i always use a vpn. I know it it not necessary, but i leave my vpn on.

I might try and use AD links without the vpn as an experiment, or as previously stated, i might change my vpn protocol.

Thank you all for your replies and helpful tips.

Correct so long as you use your debrid links there is no reason for VPN. Lots of people don’t understand that. You are on the right track in trying different things until you come up with a solution. I keep my Stremio set ups super simple Torrentio addon with Debrid and that’s all I do with Stremio even though it is capable of more. So I have no need to overkill or slow it down with VPN. VPN has its place but not in conjunction with debrid service.

This is another thought and way to look at streaming. Have you thought about using something like Weyd or Syncler? They run on and off of debrid service so there is no need for VPN. But you pay a little for the service. Weyd is less expensive than Syncler and than the average VPN is also. Both are easier to use than Kodi and even Stremio for the average person.

The thing is, the VPN isn’t solely for insuring your ISP doesn’t know what you are streaming, copyrighted material or otherwise. My main reason for remaining anonymous, as much as humanly possible, is to reduce the potential for identity theft. Not many are aware of that.
Have fun and STREAM ON!!

VPN has its place and I am not advocating against VPN on a site that is funded in part off VPN. But it is an Overkill in certain situations when using Debrid services and streaming.

I set up a lot of devices for other people and I found that influencing them to pay for Weyd and Real Debrid is just by far the easiest and most efficient way for the average person to stream safely without confusing them.

Stremio is a not so distant second but I have to remind them to only use the Debrid links. Many if not most are not that super uber concerned with being tracked. If I’m doing something I feel is more black hat than streaming then I need a VPN service. Back in the day when torrenting it was a different story. I was an original tor onion member and user. It was soooo slow… Lol. But you felt safe. It’s still around in a way.

Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with keeping it simple. Later

Using a debrid service in no way makes your streaming safe.

And that’s simply not true for everyone. Where I’m at I definitely do not need a VPN if I use debrid for streaming. This is copied directly from the premiumize.me website. One of the services I pay for and this is why.

"Do I need to use a VPN?

You can use a VPN on top of using Premiumize.me but there is no security advantage. All connections to and from our servers are already encrypted. Additionally, our servers are not public knowledge so your ISP would not know what service or download you are using.
If you use a VPN it will not make a difference on our end but please be aware that we optimize speeds for your location and network. If you use a VPN we do not know your final ISP network and and we can only adapt for an optimal routing to the VPN server location, as this is the last known endpoint.
The speed from your VPN destination to you is on your VPN provider.
Additionally; weaker devices such as smartphones and TV boxes might see a performance drop for the double wrapped encrypted connection."

Have a good evening.

You go ahead and not use a vpn, but you are wrong. That is your choice. These
Services are not completely secure.
