Sneak Peak at My New IPTV DVR/Plex Media Server

I’ve got 7 TB across 2 portable external drives. Been using my laptop as a dedicated Plex server for several years, this may finally give me an opportunity to use my laptop for something else and build a dedicated media server!

Hi guys, I just checked it out on the Zimaboard.com site , the 832 is now at $159.92 US ($218.02 CAD) and shows as free shipping to Canada (I am in Canada). There may be some customs fees but not sure. It says it’s a July Prime Day 20% off the regular $199.99. I’m hoping Troy’s full vid comes out soon so I can see if it would work for me. Both using my laptop or USB recording on Tivimate gives me bad results eg: 1 minute recordings etc no matter what I do. Maybe this will workout …

There are lots of NAS home server setups you can get for less than $200. If you want to go junkyard setup you can get a win10 pro workstation used for less than $100 and get that working. Am doing that for myself now. Running PLEX and NEXTPVR to do everything. Had a learning curve for setup but it’s stable now.

Am finding NEXTPVR for $25 on a NAS is more stable than TIVIMATE on a firetvmax or ONN.

Prime day price $183.99

Hi freak, I ordered the 832 and i did get it for $159.92 US ($218.02 CAD) with free shipping to Canada. I believe that “prime” special is on the 14th of the month, maybe that’s why the price moved up. Keep an eye on the site, especially around the 14th, cheers

I bought everything you listed.

Was Setting It Up & While The ZimaBoard was Updating my internet went down.

Now I have to unplug the Zima board so My internet will work.

What’s wrong?

Every time I power up the Zima board my internet goes down. Even with the ethernet cable unplugged from the router that goes to the Zima board.

I hooked up an extra router to the main router modem and it is working through the 2nd router. Don’t know why it was disabling my internet when plugging in the Zima board to my main router.

Was able to update it and it’s working but for some reason it’s not recognizing my usb storage drive.

UPDATE: I had to use the cable that come with the Zima board to add and create the external storage. Now it will work with the usb adapter.

I was thinking the same thing.

Went ahead and got my Zima board and hard drive. Hooked it all up. Ran a few updates. Loaded Plex. Linked the hard drive files to the library. All is well. Need to fix a double NAT issue on my network to fix remote access but that should be easy. Excited to get the recording going before football season.

I have a question on a similar topic. I have a Plex server running 24/7 on my home network. I use Sparkle IPTV app, and it has the ability to function as a DVR (similar to Tivimate). The problem I have is that Sparkle can’t connect to the Plex server if the VPN (Surfshark) is enabled for Sparkle. If I turn off the VPN, then I can connect to the Plex server and use it for recording (DVR).

I realize that the obvious solution would be to add the VPN to the router (router based VPN). However, my Spectrum email will not allow me to send email if I’m not directly connected to their SMTP server. In other words, I can’t use my email with a VPN. If I used a router based VPN, then I couldn’t send email. The only way I can use the Plex server with Sparkle is to turn off the VPN, thus making my system more vulnerable.

Any ideas how to get around this dilemna?

put the vpn on the server. then anything streamed that is connected will not need a vpn.

Ron, thanks for the reply. I must not have made myself clear. I’m wanting to record an IPTV feed from the Sparkle IPTV app onto the Plex server. I don’t see how putting the VPN on the server would help.

It would isolate it from your pc so the vpn wouldnt intefere with email. ???

I’m afraid I still don’t understand. I’m streaming IPTV on an ONN box. I want the VPN on the ONN box to “isolate” the streaming. The only thing the server is doing is storing video files. However, with the ONN box behind the firewall (VPN), and the server outside, they can’t “talk” to each other.

Split Tunneling or White list should be in your VPN settings. This allows a service to bypass the VPN and go straight to the internet, such as EMail.

sorry, I was thinking you hosted the iptv on your server and the onn box drew from that. My bad

However that’s what I do.

Thanks, Miki. I use split tunneling with Surfshark to allow my email when the VPN is enabled on my dekstop & laptop. I don’t have a VPN on the server, which is a separate (third) computer. I only mentioned the problem with VPN & email to explain why I couldn’t run the VPN on the router. Email is not an issue when the VPN is installed on each device.

I have my vpn on a router and direct it which devices to protect.

Ron, thanks for the info. To be honest, I never thought to run the IPTV from the Plex server. Maybe I’ll have to look into that.
