Roku Bricking TVs Unless Users Accept ‘Dispute Resolution Terms’ (pcmag.com)
I guess I’d never buy one of their TVs!
Many apps have arbitration clauses in their Terms of Service Agreements. Who reads them? I’d never sue a big multi-national corporation. Just give me my $5 in a class action if it ever comes. Big corporations get sued by disgruntled customers for silly things. It is what it is.
Everyone is much better off just buying and connecting a good streaming device to their tv via hdmi cable than to use a smart tv’s operating system to load and stream apps. Most of these tvs have closed operating systems, have very little excess internal memory and limit you to loading their premium streaming service apps which cost much more than what you can get on a separate stock android or android tv device. There are a few tv manufacturers that use the android o/s, (Sony, Hisense, TCL), but their memory capacity is so limited, you will max it out very quickly.
Agreed.
It’d be better if there weren’t any ‘smart’ TVS and just 3-4 HDMI inputs on every set.
More reports. Wow is Roku run by Amazon. This is getting crazy. They all want to run us like robots.
well as Slim says…I have a roku tv but havent seen any issues because Im using it with a tv box and never look at the roku stuff.
That’s what I did for my neighbour. He got a Roku but I introduced him to streaming and his Roku is just a display device.
In a perfect world, I’d like to have 6 HDMI tv inputs on the back of every tv. Unfortunately, the most I’ve seen is 4 and if you have a good soundbar, you will need to use the tv’s HDMI CEC connection, which leaves you with 3 for all your other connections. The only way around that is to use the tv’s optical input/output and the sound output for that isn’t quite as good.
Hey @sim_bill it may not be a perfect world but it’s getting a whole lot better. I actually have 6 hdmi plugs all told. I have the latest Samsung setup. So it has what is known as a one connect box. So I have 2 hdmi inputs on the soundbar and one eARC out that goes to that box and the box has 4 HDMI inputs. Now one of those is used for the eARC from the soundbar, so there really is only 3 open. But the one connect hooks to the TV in what looks like the old serial bus plug and that runs the input/output for the TV. It’s kinda cool but the box mounts on the TV stand or if using a wall mount for the TV the box sits on a desk or such under the TV with a 6 foot cord. The box is heluva heavy to. Weighs about 20 lbs. The box is the brains of the whole setup and does switching and everything depending on what port has an active device.
I hear ya Miki. I worked a compromise with a 2/1 input/output HDMI manual switch to my LG Oled to at least give me the option to hookup 4 devices on the 3 remaining HDMI ports on my tv. I tried several 5/1 input/output HDMI switches but they worked erratically. I guess to expect more that 4 HDMI inputs on a tv is still a bridge too far.
Lol. Nope. keep dreaming. One day I bet you’ll get your wish. Isn’t this hobby a blast?
I’ve had good luck with the two Kinivo switches that I’ve owned. I recently replaced my 3 port with a 5 port switch going to my Denon AVR going to my LG C2.
I only use 1 HDMI in on my TV.
Bingo. My prior 5/1 in/out auto HDMI switch was from Kinivo. It lasted 4 months before failing. I saw it had good reviews but sad to say that was not my experience.
Can you avoid the opening screen when you turn on the TV?
Yes. In Roku go to>>>settings>>>system>>>Power>>>power on, and set it to the device you want to see at boot.
Thank you!
Roku customers are threatening to stop using, or to even dispose of, their low-priced TVs and streaming gadgets after the company appears to be locking devices for people who don’t conform to the recently updated terms of service.more here
I saw that article.
After reading it, I don’t see how it would affect using a Roku based TV for what we’d use it for.
it dosent affect using device but the point is you have no choice but to agree its a slippery slope
