Just to let everyone know Proton released a new update that adds the ability for us to access many more settings on our streaming devices than we could before. NetShield, Split tunneling, Protocol, Auto-connect, LAN, Custom DNS, Report an issue, and Sign out are now all available. First thing is to change the DNS. Woohooo, took years but at last.
Looking good, but still waiting on a killswitch for android tv boxes. ![]()

I agree. For tabs and phones the always on VPN option is the killswitch. Fingers crossed for the streamers.
They told me it’s coming when I contacted them about it.
like you say fingers crossed ![]()
They told me 2 yrs ago they were working on the settings access they just provided last week. Lol. It’ll happen when it happens, but this is a huge advance.
EDIT: I am incorrect. I was referring to Surfshark not Proton VPN, My appologies for any confusion I just caused.
Perhaps I am missing something, but Proton VPN features a network kill switch that you can toggle on and off to protect your connection if the network drops. Am I missing the intent of your concern?
I’ve had Proton for years and never seen a network killswitch. I think you are referring to the “Allways On” feature. It certainly has never been on streaming devices.
My Bad. You are right. I moved off of Proton VPN to Surfshark and it DOES have the kill switch.
It’s confusing in Proton as they do refer to it as a killswitch but when you drill down into the actual settings it is then called Always on. You have to enable that and then “block connections without VPN”.
Yes but not on streaming devices which I’ve been pushing for for years. When you travel it’s difficult or impossible to modify every modem/router you use.
Oh hey I wasn’t saying anything negative about your post, absolutely nothing wrong with what you said. I simply wanted to add additional information as to why what you said is true but only for certain aspects of the hobby. This is what insiders do, help expand others knowledge. I use a VPN on all my devices and would never connect to a public router without one, so should my VPN drop on my streaming devices, a killswitch would be very advantageous.
I tried to sign up with proton but it won’t take my email address for some reason
So is Proton VPN a no-go for streaming?
It is the bomb for streaming. Thousands of servers in 120 countries. Absolutely no impact on speed. Only drawback is no killswitch on streaming devices but they are working on it. It’s also more expensive than SurfShark, but I always get a 2 yr sub as it’s worth every penny IMHO.
With no killswitch, do you use it for streaming (& Kodi)?
Improved Whitelist?
Proton has to be better than SUIFSHARK.
I gave up kodi a long time ago. I just use stremio and TiVimate and yes I use it for streaming, in fact I use it for everything. I have the safety dot since it came out. It always lets me know if my VPN goes down which has happened about 2 times since I got Proton. If it’s unable to connect for any reason it automatically does rerouting to maintain the connection.
Really surprised more people aren’t using Proton VPN. I have used Express, Nord, SurfShark and Proton has been the best despite no kill switch. Considerably less speed loss regardless of server location. Black Friday deal coming up shortly. Their free service has little speed loss as well.
Good day @ilpadrino Did you do the update and see that you now have access to more configuration options? I sent them a thankyou and two thumbs up to the dev and once again asked for a working Killswitch that we can actually configure and use. May take them another year or two though. ![]()
