ONN TV Box "US Compatible Only"?

I bought mine in Detroit and it works in Ontario with no problem

I got one from Maricopa in the States and works great in Alberta
Had a friend visiting his winter property and he picked me one up

Lol. Hey everybody. You’re all reading way more into this than there is. This has absolutely nothing to do with the OS but one thing and one thing only, the electrical plug. North American electrical outlets use a different style plug than the UK. But even then it’s a simple adapter and it can be used in the UK. Read this thread from the beginning.

Yeah, as ‘PiratePete’ pointed out … the ‘non-compatible’ likely is referring to the LIVE tab’s ‘Google-TV’ (f.a.s.t) channels not being available.

This is undoubtedly due to a negotiated ‘geo-rights’ issue. No big loss there. Just downloading a decent free f.a.s.t app or two (TUBI, FreeVee, Xumo Play, Plex, etc) would give you more and better.
Of course, not to be bothered with for those sailing the high seas!

I suspect you’ll still be able to get the FAST free channels just as you would with geo blocking, use a VPN.

Good morning Miki! I hope you’re safe where you are. I know you’re freezing but hey …

Very well could be. I am in the U.S. so I can’t test that, but you or your UK readers could.

I am not making assumptions about what any given VPN can or can’t do these days.

For example, I just downloaded four ‘UK’ apps from TDUK’s website onto my recently set-up ONN Google-TV 4K box ($19.88) yesterday. These were supposedly modded to allow them to work on this ‘unofficial’ streamer (while you have your VPN connected to a ‘UK’ server … I use SurfShark).

These included BBC iPlayer, itvX, Channel 4, My5 and UK Play (which apparently is now just recently changed to ‘U’).

Even though TDUK’s video said they would allow these apps to be used, not only on the Google-TV streamers, but ANY streamers using Android 9, or higher … NONE of them worked correctly on my ONN box. Most, I could open (and actually sign-in), but as soon as I tried to play and VOD stuff, I’d get an ‘error message’ (detecting I was using a VPN, or similar). Oddly, a couple would let me play ‘live’ channels, but nothing more!?

I then tried connecting to one of the special ‘static’ (London) servers, to see if this would help. This temporarily got ‘BBC iPlayer’ to function (but didn’t help the others at all), but the very next time I tried to open iPlayer, it wouldn’t even open!

I tried the normal stuff … clearing the cache on both the UK apps and the SurfShark app; rebooted, etc. NO IMPROVEMENT! Unfortunately, the S.S. vpn for Google-TV and FireOS have no ‘geo-spoofing’ option to try, like on their Mobile Android version … but even that was not enough to get the (different version) UK apps on my phone to work properly! Again, I could play ‘live’ channels, but none of their VOD content (’forbidden’ pop-up message)!!

Anyway, I didn’t intend to spew all this out just now. Just wanting to point out that some apps are getting much more sophisticated in blocking and simply connecting to a county’s server doesn’t guarantee anything anymore.

Oh, I also discovered that my Canadian ‘CBC Gem’ app (with Can. server connected) no longer works on my FireSticks. Says I need a ‘newer version’ that can ONLY be downloaded from the Canadian Amazon Store (which I have no access to here in the U.S.)!! It’s not worth my while trying to deregister my Amazon account, switch countries, etc, etc.

Do you know any way I can access the proper Canadian app version from another source? The official UK versions for that matter?

Keep up the good work!

Give this a try, and FYI. Not all VPNs are created equal.

You can make a Canadian Amazon account. I have a USA one that was actually made in error but my cousin in Canada, uses his USA one all the time when needed.

Miki … thanks, I’ll try the ‘CBC Gem’ app from that site, but it actually may be ine if the ones I already tried. In case not, I’ll give it a shot.

As far as the VPNs, yes I’ve very aware of the variance in quality, speed, geo-unblocking abilities, etc. of various ones. However, I’ve never had problems with SurfShark having geo-block issues before (and I get excellent speed). Additionally, I believe it is THIS site’s #1 recommended VPN, is it not? Either you guys, ‘AFTV News’ or both.

Perhaps, you might try downloading TDUK’s modded UK apps yourself (while connected on your ONN 4K Google-TV (or any other Android-based device) to a ‘London’ server) and see if you can play any VOD content? You have to sign-up for an account with any UK post code (which I had already done for a couple of them previously), but perhaps you have already done this previously, yourself?

Regardless, I appreciate you being a mod in this site. You do an excellent job!

Wizzard … Thanks for the suggestion. I’d rather avoid that just to get a Canadian app working that I rarely use.

I actually have only been on smartphones and streaming for about 4 years and immediately hated how convoluted Amazon’s app is!

Any app that is so unintuitive that they bury the location of their damn ‘sign-out’ button (instead of having it right on the home page) is TRYING to keep people signed-in on purpose (for whatever benefit this gives them)!

Also, I don’t actually have a computer or laptop these days (I’m poor as dirt!) and only have one working eye, so using my phone to do any Amazon stuff is a P.I.A.!

So, even though setting up a 2nd Amazon acct is probably easy-peasy for most, it’s something I’d rather avoid. It’s the same reason I haven’t set up a 2nd Google Acct or Gmail Acct. At 67, it’s just too many juggling balls on my small-screen phone.

I was just hoping to SIDELOAD a current version app from somewhere that would already have the required attributes (and be ‘updatable’ without having to go to an Amazon website … like virtually all my other sideloaded apps).

I used ‘CBC Gem’ app a couple years ago and it worked perfectly fine (w/my VPN set to a CA server). Plus, it didn’t FORCE me into updating to the ‘latest’ version. If what I had was still functional (it was), then I could still log-in to my account and USE it. So, obviously, things have changed. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion! :+1:

I am using one in Germany and have another that travels Europe with me. I have not encountered any issues.

After hear

That’s great to hear. It seems that the “warning” from Walmart that ONN TV is US compatible only, refers only to the plug and not to any geoblocking. Thanks for the reassurance and the good information.

I have downloaded, installed and used the modded apps without problems. I have ProtonVPN. I have an IPTV service so the extra apps aren’t something I need and were just taking up space for me, so were uninstalled. Oh and just to clarify I am not a Mod but more like a janitor for the threads.

Mine works great here in England so It must just refer to the plug type.

Correct. It comes with a US two prong power adapter. However, I’ve used the usb from the tv for power at home, my neighbors use an EU adapter with theirs and I’ve even powered mine with an Anker power bank in an outlet-challenged hotel room in Italy.

That is probably it… The plug. The Onn box is available here in Thailand. A lot of time when I order a device I get to choose what type of plug I want.

You can actually buy the Onn box in Thailand? But it’s still not available in Canada! Go figure!
