Recently I have been hearing a lot about bricking of the Onn boxes. Is my device at risk, and what precautions should I take?
Thanks in advance!
That was due to a recent update. Hold off on updating until someone else can confirm if this has been fixed.
What update are you refering to? The only update that I am aware of is to Android 14 that had no impact at all on the Onn’s. I have three, My friends have more than ten. No problems reported.
Hmmm, maybe I am getting my devices mixed up lol. Maybe someone can correct me and let me know what the heck I am actually thinking
I had two ONN 4k’s disabled when they updated from 12 to 14.
The newer one was bricked. The older one, I was able to go through the hardware factory reset and bring it back to life. Both of them hd Wolf Launcher.
Ok, so I am not a complete moron, just a partial one. Didn’t they pause the update because of complaints that this was happening?
Yep…but I wasn’t aware in time.
It’s my understanding from this forum that Wolf Launcher was bricking some Onn’s. I have it on one and never had a problem but to be honest, for the 13 seconds I’m on the home screen, I don’t really need a launcher. Back in the FS days, I thought it was imperative. Two weeks ago, I finally put one old FS to rest … with a hammer and into the trash.
It didn’t seem to be all of them. I just saw this article that regained some of my sanity
yep brand new pro boxes autoupdate when you first turn them on. So I imagine all new releases of pro models will come with 14 right from factory. I use Projectivy launcher and have had no issues with boxes I have updated, or the plus models that come with 14. Hope Walmart actualy fixed with this roll out
I’m curious to see if I get another 14 update. I will let everyone know when it rolls out to me.
Did you get Projectivy directly from the Play store without using Launcher Manager?
yes i did. works just like every other box i have programmed. There is a new update for projectivy. when you download from playstore, you get the latest version
Update my 4k box last night. Now nothing but the android tv logo and a line.
I have four of the onn devices. They all four. Got the Android 14 update with no issues. Initial issue with one of them would not connect to Wi-Fi. I did a factory reset with the little pin button and everything worked out once it updated
I have likely setup close to 100 ONN box devices & 1 stick. Have only encountered 1 problem & this was a new box which had a factory defect in the wifi.
Do not buy the stick version as it is as bad as a Firestick.
Best is the new model selling for $30, zero problems processor is fast & the amount of memory is good. Most of my friends and relatives purchase the $20 box for bedroom TV’s otherwise the $30 new model for high use living room/den/mancave TV’s.
I never install a 3rd party launcher on any of them.
I also always install the Troypoint Kodi fork but generally limit it to 3 addons, I usually 1 sport, 1 movie & a live TV addon. I never install a Kodi Build.
While there are a plethera of movie/sport/live TV apps available, it is best to not overload this device and to make sure to keep a minimum of 1.5 to 1.8g free space.
It is my experience that the vast majority of users will generally use only 3 apps for movies, 2 for sports and 1 to 2 for live TV.
Of all the ONN devices I have set up - none has bricked post setup.
The only advice I will give everyone is to ONLY download Downloader from the Playstore. Do Not Install ANY other apps from Playstore & then afterwards Always Disable Playstore and tell everyone to click Dismiss on any Nag Popup which sometimes appears during installation of other apps.
Regard Playstore just as the Amazon store and never use it. Also Disable the Playstore scan scan in Security.
Have zero desire to debate reasons or why, can care less concerning KODI afficionado’s or respond to self-proclaimed “experts” who can only wear a “hat” if it has a logo printed upon it.
Otherwise - Happy Streaming.
I have 5 ONN boxes; 3 pros, 1 plus, 1 4k. All updated to the latest OS and no problems on any of them. Not sure what others are doing with theirs but mine are just fine
