Nvidia Shield pros and cons

Thinking about buying a different device since mine isn’t supported or updated anymore. I see alot like it and wanted to know your likes and dislikes. I don’t game, just stream so not sure which model to get. Money isn’t an issue. I go online and get lots of opinions. So i would like to know all of your opinions. I did do a search and couldn’t find the right answers. Thanks

Pro: Best Streaming device overall on the market today.

Cons: Only wifi5, no AV1, 3gb memory instead of 4+.

Exactly what answers are you looking for?

No matter what data you look into, or rating you’ve researched the Nvidia Pro is ALWAYS ranked in the Top Tier of streaming devices. They do regular updates and have a ton of support groups and sites if you experience any issue. Their CS responds very well. They even have their own Nvidia Tech Supported forums/websites.

The Official NVIDIA Forums | NVIDIA

SHIELD TV Community | NVIDIA GeForce Forums

Bottom line, they just work and are well built to last a very, very, long time. My oldest Nvidia is about 8 years old now and I use it every single day since the day I bought it. Being an old retired guy, that means it is running at least 12 hours a day non-stop. Never have I experienced ANY hardware issues what-so-ever.

Imho, the Nvidia gives you the best bang for your buck, bar none. Yes, you can get a much cheaper devices, and the operative word here is “cheaper”, because they do not last as long and have a plethora of software and hardware issues (over-heating for one). You can also get a more elite box from a number of places, but take into consideration, support and updates. The Nvidia brand is probably the most recognized in this media and would believe in building that name. They would not want to jeopardize their brand…can another device manufacturer make that claim?

Btw, imho, I see in the very near future TV’s themselves with a devices built-in will dominate the streaming market. Thereby, eliminating a lot of the external streaming device market. Amazon, Google are leading this march in a very aggressive manner.

(3) New Amazon 65" OMNI QLED 4k TV… Firestick Built in - YouTube

So the near future argument will be Amazon TV, Google TV, Apple TV as in who has the best complete package. Amazon is going as far as trying to monopolize the market by offering not only Fire TV, Amazon TV, but also competing in the IP market.

I agree with Powerfader, first I am no expert, I have had a couple android boxes in the past and had trouble with them so I wanted something new. I did research and had it down to 3. I went with the shield pro and I am very happy I did, smooth set up. With the help from the poeple here I installed a 1TB SSD external storage, it was easy with the shield plug and play. Hope that helps, great support here thank you.

Don’t throw away a device because its not updating, sometimes that’s a good thing.

The only real problem I’ve had with my shield is when they pushed out a bad software update a couple of years ago which wasn’t a good experience and it still leaves a band taste in my mouth. It is a durable piece of equipment though. I also have 3 Fire TV cubes (retired all my FireSticks) which work very well, but like the shield better just for the android system which is my go to choice.

In addition to Nvidia Shield and BuzzTV, take a look at the Ugoos AM6 B Plus review on Utube by TV Box Stop. Amazon has them at $189. They are extremely well made, with a high end Amlogic Processor, 4gbs of RAM, 32 gbs of internal memory, very large heatsinks and metal casing for great cooling without the need for any cooling fan. The open stock android 9 o/s allows you the freedom to download any apps you like and customize your box anyway you’d like. I have owned mine for 3 years, never turn it off and it runs as well as the day I bought it. Like the Shield, Ugoos devices are high quality and built to last.

I figure if you put in the search about Nvidea, lots should show up. Only two items which didn’t even address what I was asking. The search parameters here are really short and need to be broadened so you can stop telling people to do a search when they do. Nvidea is all you should have to put in a search and EVERTHING connected to Nvidea should come up. it doesn’t. Also don’t assume I didn’t do a search, very condescending on your part. Been at this stuff for a long time and kind of know my stuff. Just improve the weak search part of the website

Minix has had a problem over the past few years and one model , the only one really working, is not being supported anymore. This was just over a year after buying. The newer model just has never worked well and is the one that is the most updated. I have had them over 4 and 3 years. Time for something new.

Minix are expensive, I never could see paying that much to try it out. Good specs tho.

I use the Nvidia Shield for 8 years now.
First the 2015,2017 and now the 2019 pro version.
Dolby atmos ,uppscrawling, fast processor, and one of the best for streaming.
Greetings from the Netherlands.

Hi
I just bought BUZZTV box X5 limited edition I had nvidia Shield but the BUZZTV has a little more of everything

Using voltar box for last 4 years and it seems to work well … Also has selectable desktop… Very nice

The best device is one that gives you all the features that you need and you’re completely satisfied with it for the cheapest price. And that last a decent time to justify the cheaper price. :sunglasses::sunglasses:

Yep, that update was a real bear. As soon as I got my Shields straightened out I turned off automatic updates and haven’t had a problem since.
