Nvidia Shield debating on Switching from Firestick?

The Max also now has an Ai or AR module called Aria. Haven’t figured out what exactly it does or how to use it. More to study.

Been looking into this BigDave and come across two models of nVidea Shield Pro; there is this one, Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K HDR Ready Media Streamer.

The other one seems to have the same name but the size is different, NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro Streaming Media Player; 4K HDR movies, live sports, Dolby Vision-Atmos, AI-enhanced upscaling. If you or anyone else can advise me if there are differences between the two. I like what I read about the A1 technology. Many thanks again for the additional information. As you can see Amazon UK it is very expensive but at nVidea it is priced at £178 ($205). Wonder if it might be picked up cheaper on Black Friday in November. I realise that my current setup with my old Synology 215j is a bit too slow and to upgrade to a faster model is going to set me back around £350, so now looking to put a 2tb SSD into my PC for storing my media stuff.

Couple of additional questions, can you side load apps on to the Media Pro 2022. Also, what is the format of the HDMI, HDMI 2.1 or HDMI 2.0?

To me I chose the Pro for the $50 usd difference. 16g as opposed to 8gb. I have no experience with the Shield itself but the Shield Pro is hands down an amazing easy to use device. It really is a beast for what I do with it. I have not tried the gaming aspect of it but my family loves it as well. One of the easiest, simple remotes to use as well and the design of remote is nice. The remote is well made with a “find my remote” beep if you were to misplace it. I have it connected to my phone and if one of our Grandkids misplaces it, I can make it send a beep to find. It’s a little safer now it’s in our bedroom. Lol

I will use my $19.88 Onn box. I watch movies and sports, no gaming or downloading movies. I use SS and stremio. I also use Film+, Beetv, and Smart tube. I have not had any problems except when the remote unpaired, the fix was to press the button on front of the Onn box to repair the remote.

My shield is completely updated and there are no issues. Works great. Stable fixes have been out for a couple of months now. Give it a go.

Don’t blame you one bit. Grandkids have them on their TV’s and they are a fantastic device for that. I like them

Is “The Team” an add on for Kodi?

About two years ago I was getting started in streaming and had one FireStick. I was led to believe the NvidiaShield was much better so I bought one. I had problems recording to a USB drive with the NS and none with the FS. I sent the NS back to Amazon and subsequently purchased more FSs. I now have four FS’s and am very happy with the performance. I am able to record on one and share with the others with no problem. The picture and sound are great. Why would I want a NS?

I’m with you. I use my 4K Max exclusively. I do have an ONN that sits in my cupboard. It’s nowhere near as good as the Max, but then it’s just around $20-30. I do have a KM2 fully configured as a backup.
Max+powerhub+16GB Sandisk USB Drive+Auvipal mini keyboard=one happy camper. I can use ethernet but WiFi is faster.
Have fun and STREAM ON.

This is a good topic. Everybody opened up with their setup and what they’re using. I learned a lot thank you.

Ive noticed mentions of rercording issues with the shield. Actually having recorded with most boxes of one variety or another ive had no problem with any of them. The shield actually lets you record with the live channels app that is free and availiable to most android tv installs however nvidea took another step and integrated with the app and recording out of the box. So no additional software is needed just storage and its basically a few clicks to setup.

In the last 2 days surfshark stopped my streaming five times. I had to force stop surfshark and turn it back on to get my streaming working. I was on San Diego server I changed in Los Angeles to see how it works.

Are you in Cali? If so try stepping out and try connections farther away. I know that sounds strange but its how I get better streaming. In my early days of SS I would connect to LA servers but quality soon changed, so I went to Dallas, KC, Tampa etc…wound up with my best stream out of NY.

Yup, 114 and burning up the state. Thats weird, I’ll try it.

Yes, I love my shield, and highly recommend it. but I should note that I still use my fire stick as well when using prime and FireTV recast (home run 4k would be a better option than recast but I’m not ready to toss out my Amazon dvr just yet)

I have multiple fire TV sticks from gen 1 to cube to latest 4k max. For running apks not from the Amazon store the 2nd fire tvs (aka 1st gen 4k) works best of all models, you can pick these up sometimes on woot for $15. The’re just quicker and less glitchy than the current TV sticks.

But the shield still blows away any fire stick or other box for that matter, if you plan on running kodi or other labour intensive apps this would be my recommendation.

What are you hoping to do with Plex?

Didnt help, buffing worse. It maybe the high heat .

On my PC I have an 250gb SSD that has now become redundant, so I decided to try out Plex using my PC as the server. Had some teething problems that I have sorted. What I do at the moment is to look at films and shows I have downloaded via Kodi/Crew and stored them on my old Synology NAS, viewing them via Kodi; it is not very fast but can view my films/shows fine. On top of this I have an excellent UK IPTV company that provides all my sport I want, plus a lot of films and shows.

As for Plex my initial view is the custom storage I have made on my PC works OK and IMO the layout is slightly better and a bit better picture quality. As for the rest of the Plex stuff on there I am not overly impressed as it is mainly geared to US content and would like to see more UK content.

So I have held back for the time being in buying nVidea Media Shield to see how things go with Plex. As I said, not overly impressed with it so far and as the main thing for me that I see with Shield is the A1 graphics and the increased storage (16gb) and having the ethernet outlet and 2 - USB3 sockets that the 4K Plus stick does not have. To overcome that I use the Ugreen Adapter with 3 - USB3 sockets and 1gb ethernet outlet.

Bottom line at the moment is to see what Plex does for me before I make up my mind but not very inspiring at the moment. I question what would the nVidea Shield do for me that the Amazon 4K Max does not do, other than what I laid out here.

Update to what I previously said. Just realised that with the Plex without subscription, there are ads to put up with Uggggh!!! I am not prepared to pay another subscription on top of what I pay my IPTV, which I might add is a lot cheaper and filled with loads of UK content.

So basically have to say, that apart from viewing stuff I downloaded and put on storage on PC’s SSD, Plex is a waste of time. So the bottom line is what is nVidea Shield Pro going to do for me, other than cost me over three times what I paid for my Firestick layout with Ugreen adapter?
