NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro Streaming Media Player, why is it rated so highly?

I added an external portable 500 GB SSD - easy peasy. All recordings are pointed to it to save to.

Recording IPTV is hit-&-miss. I would say 60 - 70% of my recordings record fine. The others are corrupted due to a myriad of reasons - the main one is the feed of what’s being recorded - any buffering will generally mean the recording will be corrupted.

Yes, you can. You have many options to record using a player such as Tivimate, and you can even record directly from the Nvidia device itself!

I have all my recording directed and stored in my external usb drive.

Hey guys, just saw this post and first time posting even though I’ve been following Troypoint for years.
I discovered Kodi through Troypoint and his recommendation for jailbreaking fire sticks, which has gotten me into Amazon’s world. I’ve had a few sticks and my main living room has a 2nd generation cube on it. Was thinking of upgrading to the shield, but didn’t know which model I would want and the price has me apprehensive. But it seems you get what you pay for and be consensus seems to be they are the best if price isn’t a concern. Now it’s just a case of which model.
Having said that, my wife likes a lot of UK shows. I’ve gotten the UK apps for the stations and with VPN she can watch a lot of them. I’ve now reintegrated a bunch of them onto Kodi, which has given her a few more options. But she kind of knows the feel of Amazon and I’m wondering how different that would be not using Amazon infrastructure on the shield. Do I just use Amazon player since I’m not in fire stick’s world on the shield? I don’t really want to buy Britbox or Acorn because they don’t have everything she might want. So I’m trying to find out what can I do for her to watch a bunch of foreign, mostly UK, television.

EDIT: I guess I should have mentioned that I don’t record anything; I strictly stream. I don’t want to overwhelm her with how to record stuff. And just to not open an old can of worms, because at one time I had four VCRs hooked up when I was getting cable TV because there were always different shows on at the same time. Up until the last 3 months I still had the VHS tapes because I figured someday I’ll be stuck in bed and laid up somewhere and I’ll be able to watch all those old shows. Who knew streaming would happen like it did now and I’d have access to them back then, huh? It was enough of a sore subject that I don’t want to bring up. Even a possibility of recording something somewhere. We had enough trouble with the hard drive on Xfinity and clearing off what was being recorded; so I don’t even bother recording anything if I can help it. Just the OTA and whatever streaming I can get. I do have a lifetime Plex account that I intend to put all our pictures, home videos and music on so we can access it, but I’m a newbie in this and trying to figure out the best way to do what I’d like to do. And that definitely started with cutting the court! I had IP Vanish based on Troy’s recommendation, and have moved to Surfshark. I heard him review the Vilfo router that he said was his main router when he tested it a couple years ago, but I can’t seem to find out if he is still using it since it’s been some time and things do get outdated. I went ahead and just recently ordered it, so I have factory reset the one router I loaded the IP Vanish on and with the two routers I have use them as access points through the Vilfo. I got the FS Cube because it had more storage and I got tired of the OTG and hard drives through the fire stick. But most of what I watch now is legitimate apps on the fire stick. And then I have the VPN to turn on for the legitimate apps for the UK stations. I just had to work to get those from the Amazon UK store which took some finagling since I’m in the US. Wife understands we need to have VPN on and in the UK for her to watch those UK apps. Just had difficulty with the BBC shows, which is why I went back to using Kodi with BBC iPlayer, which she understands needs to also have the VPN on. I just have the collection of apps loaded on the Cube and part way down I have the Surf shark app and after it is the UK apps and Kodi. She understands the apps after the VPN app need to have the VPN on from that point further down the list. Since we haven’t really used Kodi or any of the other APKs that I would need the VPN for, I’ve let my Real Debrid subscription expire. If she’s going to keep going that route, I’ll may start buying some more time so I know we’re getting better results with a subscription. I do have Trakt & Real Debrid accounts, but I’m not paying for a subscription since it hasn’t been used for awhile.
Are there a worry about the Nvidia’s being outdated, though? I understand they haven’t really been upgraded for a few years. In fact, I thought I had just read in here that there were questions about if they were going to upgrade soon.

Shield Pro seems to be the top of the heap. It’s definitely not FireTV which is a good thing these days. I’m sure lots will pop in telling all about their joy owning a Shield Pro.

If you were going to go the Nvidia Shield route, I would recommend going the Pro route. They also have the tube shield version, but honestly if you are going that route why not just spend a little more to get the best. Pro has more memory but also has active cooling like a laptop. It honestly is overkill for most cord-cutting. The unit is built for gaming, but has killer upscaling and is just overall super user friendly. I have had it since January of 2021, and am still amazed every day that there is a streaming box this good. I use it, my mom (who is awful with technology) uses it a little bit, my wife and even 4 year old son. I do have a 500 GB Samsung T7 hooked up to it for excess storage if I need it, which the Shield makes so easy to set up. I have it hooked up to Alexa, my surround sound system, and even have a Harmony Hub, and the good ol’ Shield Pro hasn’t let me down.

edit: I also should mention the slight downsides just to be fair. I am annoyed the Shield doesn’t offer Wifi 6, but I keep mine hardwired into the gigabit ethernet port. I also think it should have a little more memory, but doesn’t affect its performance because of how high end the other components are. Next Shield should have AV1 support as well. (end of negatives lol)

So… I don’t mean to send you down a rabbit hole here… But there are a lot of options for you based on what you are asking. Firstly, Amazon OS is just a fork of Android TV. So the layout might look a little different on the Shield but you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Secondly, if you’re interested in signing up for an “unverified” IPTV provider, a lot of them have as many UK channels as they do US channels. Tivimate is by far the best media player for IPTV. And if you have the money buy the Shield Pro. No sense in buying the regular tube for that price. If you’re committed to spending that much to begin with it’s worth it to spend a little bit more and get the best.

I have had the 2017 Shield for like close to 5 years now…and it’s still kicking and Just bought the 2019 Shield pro there expensive, but very reliable and totally google certified then most android TV box’s and especially if you have a home entertainment system shield has sound from a-z most others don’t have it

When you pair Real Debrid with Kodi or other compatible apps you don’t really need to record anything other than live events like the news or sports. You will be able to find almost all major movies and shows with Real Debrid after they have been released. And don’t worry about the Shield Pro being a little older. It was built to last and it’s still one of the best. However, I’m sure eventually they will come out with a newer model that supports the new AV1 codec. But it may take another year, 2, maybe 3. How long do you want to wait though? Other than the AV1 codec I don’t think much else of significance is going to change in the streaming world for the next few years. Hardware is hardware. It’s the software updates that matter more.

Wi fi 6 or higher is about the only thing missing from the Shield

I really don’t have any issues streaming 4K sources, so I don’t place a high priority on that like others do.

The shield is awesome. Got 1 a month ago and it beats stick and most android boxes. Very quick.

Used a firestick. Very buffery, if you will. Watching live sports was like watching a series of still photos. Nvidia shield did the trick for me.

I rarely get any buffering on my Max and watch a ton of sports. The sticks are lacking in storage, power, and RAM. That’s where the Shield shines. But $35 compared to $199. Not really a fair comparison.

$164 on Ebay and $179 on Amazon, Bestbuy, and Nvidia website. jus sayin…

And that is for the Pro. The Tubes are even less expensive, but I don’t even the Tube I bought. Might use it for the TV I plan on putting out on my back porch later this spring.

I also have a USB drive and a powered otg hub on my Max and never have any space issues regarding apps. My max is always 2.8Gbs free. I wish it did have at least 3 Gbs of RAM like the shield.

Not good in Canada

Don’t know what the shipping costs to Canada are?

Btw, judging from the remote. that looks like a 2017 model.

Saw this info on a new 2017 model for $164. If you live close enough to the border why not buy in the US, or maybe have someone mail it to you. I really don’t know anything about shipping costs to Canada, though.

I just did a lookup for somewhere in Toronto with this postal code: M5C 2V9. The cost to ship is abot $16 USD.This would ship from California to Toronto.
