NVIDIA gives the ageing Shield TV a new lease on life with fresh update

The hotfix update brings several bug fixes and a new feature.

  • NVIDIA is rolling out a long overdue software update for the Shield TV.
  • The hotfix update brings several bug fixes and introduces a new Match Frame Rate feature.

Despite its age, NVIDIA’s Shield TV is still one of the best Android TV streaming devices on the market. However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to recommend due to inconsistent software support in recent years. It has only received one hotfix update since NVIDIA upgraded it to Shield Experience 9.1.1 in November 2022, but the company is finally rolling out another hotfix to address some common issues.

The second hotfix update (version 33.2.0.252) includes a host of bug fixes and introduces a new beta feature that can match your display’s refresh rate to the content frame rate. According to the official announcement on NVIDIA’s forums (via 9to5Google), the update also fixes issues that resulted in GeForce Now crashing after launch and DRM-related crashes in streaming apps. You can find the full changelog reproduced below:

  • Match Frame Rate (beta) enhancement
  • Resolves issue with SHIELD drive filling up
  • Fixes the issue of No audio heard when headset is connected to controller and DAP is on
  • Resolves issue of Geforce now crash after launch
  • Ability to clear HDMI 1.4 flag via factory reset
  • Fixed video distortion on “RGB 8-bit Rec.709” display mode
  • Resolved USB HDD/Flash drive showing corrupted after hotplug
  • NAS folder info shows 0 B and not the actual capacity
  • Mounted storages aren’t listed after upgrade
  • Fixes occasional crashes in DRM apps

To get the second hotfix update, you’ll have to head over to NVIDIA’s forum post and sign up for the hotfix using the linked Google Doc. NVIDIA has listed some caveats to joining the hotfix process that we highly recommend you go through before signing up. The update should land on your device automatically if you signed up for the previous hotfix update.

TxRon, have you tried the “CoreELEC” that some of those guys speak of in regards to that article? I figure you are pretty cutting edge with new stuff, just wondering. (about to research on it now…https://coreelec.org/)

Nothing there of value to me really. But as soon as I can get it I will update as always. Still a no go for my Shield though.

Not yet but I hear good things esp if you are a kodi fan. I did try Libreelec when it 1st started out, similar in scope. Sounds like a project I might dive back in to.

I’ve been looking into CoreELEC but if it’s anything like LibreELEC is on a PC, it requires a little more maintenance and babysitting than just running Kodi on Android. You’ll also have to spend more money on a box than you would if just chose to install Kodi on say something like an Onn box.
The CoreELEC guys like the Homatics Dune 4K and other boxes that go for around $100. But, CoreELEC probably runs smoother and faster too without all of that Android bloat.

On my shield Pro it downloaded some hot fix upgrade, and every time I turn the unit on in the morning there’s a banner I believe it says 911 or hot fix 11 upgrade or something that effect and it says details or cancel. I hit the details and nothing happens and there’s no other way to activate the banner. Anybody else experienced this. Anybody else being able to update this hot fix or whatever it is.
And just this morning again I had a reboot my shell Pro by unplugging the power and every time I do that I have to repair my 4K Maxx remote to it which is a little tricky.

Still waiting for the update as well.

Is anyone else having an issue with the Live section? Yes i know you iptv people dont even look at it… lol

I get “something went wrong” and no tv listing. I have reset router and Nvidia and unplugged it. But will wait for the update to see if that resolves it.

Its actually only the "Free TV Channels " from Google that is affected. Pluto, tubi etc, work on their own but i cant get the program guide or Free tv icon to open.

Yeah you’re right IPTV people don’t watch free channels LOL. Reminds me and I’m paying $315 for DirecTV is the same channels that I get later on on broadcast off of antenna. Crazy huh? LOL

Yeah, but is your Live section working? Not sure if its just me or others as well. I dont think Canada gets the Live tv option.

Yes it works. I get live programming on the free section.
