Not really. I just use Ethernet Cat 6 cables to both my boxes and get between 75 - 135 mbs/15/30 mbs download/upload speeds with my vpn. No buffering at all up to 4k. A vpn can only be as good as the internet feed will allow.
Oh I know all about reducing buffering. You’re one of the lucky ones when it comes to IPVanish and being dependable for you. I rarely have buffering with my Max, ONN and KM2. Speeds have not been a problem fo me once I switched to ProtonVPN. Have a great day Bill.
I use Express VPN. I do hear good things about Proton also.
ExpressVPN is an excellent VPN that I used for quite some time. Proton is ok, but not the best for streaming devices. You can’t get into the settings to do things like white listing or split tunneling.
I already have an mecool box, all I require in a TV box is to watch TV & Films through Kodi, live UK premiere league football. I don’t need live TV or to play games or to record TV or Films. Do you think it would be worth me upgrading to the new mecool ox?
If everything is working good then there’s probably no reason to upgrade.
I don’t think anyone but you can answer that question. If your device is doing everything you need and getting you what you want, then why upgrade? If it’s not working smoothly or giving you problems, then upgrade.

Great point I now have 4 versions of this loser device setting on my electronic deal box. I gave up and went to the ONN line, much more stable than McCool was ever. Sorry but that’s the way it was.
