Watched Troy’s video. all was good until I tried to connect the client to the server. It should have been automatic, but failed. I then tried to connect by putting in the name of my PC. It also failed. I then tried putting in the IP address and it also failed. Yes they are on the same wifi, except my PC is on wifi6 and the omni pro is on wifi5. They are both using the same password. Can anyone help?
Hello @jlsthird Is VPN active on any of those two devices? If so, try disabling and see if that makes a difference.
Troy , I just watched ur vid on u-tube n left a comment but Ill repeat: SUPER Excited to get a follow up vid on how to pair JF w/my synology nas. I lost contact w/ all my content (a buttload) w/plex after updating plex over 2yrs ago. Just to figure it out / have had health issues last couple of yrs. Hope JF will resolve. Plex also yup, too bloated n outpriced themselves
TY ,TP You’ve taught me so much in streaming world. GOD bless ya !!!
Please help! I installed Jellyfin following your tutorial. Which was very explicit, thank you. When I got to where I installed the client, It did not discover any servers. I entered the name of my computer into the ‘Enter Server Address’, no dice. My ip address, no dice. Bluetooth is on and my computer can be recognized by its name.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Troypoint.
My movies and TV shows are on external drives that I called media.
So the path to type in was:
/media/computer name/media/Movies
I can’t recall whether the “/Movies” was required or whether I could select from a drop down menu or the like.
If my movies were on my main, internal drive, then I would’ve had to start with /home instead of media.
TP mentioned it before to somebody else. Try disabling VPN on server & device to see if that does it
No, it did not. VPN is off. I should enter the name of my computer, correct?
I don’t have to enter anything because it automatically detects it through the network.
Have you tried rebooting router, computer, and streaming device? Even though they are on different WiFi signals it should still work.
I rebooted everything and still no connection. Maybe I’ll try reinstalling Jellyfin.
I get there is a difference between uncompressed and compressed video files. Is it such a big deal for the average user? Do typical torrent sites have uncompressed files? If not where does one find them? Thank you.
It depends on your equipment & your eyes.
For the quality of my equipment all boxes $50 & under and our TVs, uncompressed or compressed wouldn’t make any difference for our enjoyment.
Thought of that too. It didn’t help
I have installed it on several streaming devices and had to enter the server name and ip address every time, and then it will find it automatically after that.
Glad you got it working! When I did mine it automatically finds it on the network. We will make note of this in future tutorials. Thank you!
I have tried more than once to install Jellyfin, and I get to clicking on the tray and the window then wants me to connect to my server, which is the desktop name. I click it, and no connection. I type in 192.168.1.100:8096 and or https://myserver.com, still no connection. My system works perfectly with Emby and Plex.
When I get that message, my server has been signed into, say my main router address and my devices into the guest address or secondary router’s address.
I’ve also found that using the “Quick Connect” feature is more reliable than the user/password method.
I finally was able to connect with my desktop, but having trouble with my android box. I think I have tried every combination, but obviously not the right one
I just setup my Jellyfin server following your detailed video. Would definitely like more information about remote access when you get a chance. Thanks so much for providing this tutorial.
Set up a free Tailscale account.
Install Tailscale on your desktop. If you’re using a Windows machine, there’s a link to install it just like any other app you’d install on your desktop.
The desktop will be assigned a Tailscale address by the Tailscale app, in the form of 100.xxx.xxx.xxx. You can get the address by going to your Tailscale account page on the website. This will be your home device.
Install Tailscale from the Playstore on your streaming device. Go to the app and click on “Connect”. Then go to your Jellyfin app, open it up and either Add Account or click on the Server rectangle. Click Add Server and type in the IP address from your desktop.
As far as I recall, that was about it. One thing that you must remember is that both the client (streaming device) and the server must both be connected to Tailscale.
BTW, the Tailscale account page will have a very friendly panel to keep track of your devices. The client’s app and the Windows app will too.
Thanks so much! I was already going down this path based on my web searches. I’m glad you took the time to give me a detailed explanation.
