Jellyfin server setup

The only reason I can mix and match recordings with emby is I am a paid subscriber. I just basically download them to same location and have emby sort them.

Supposedly, Jellyfin has those capabilities. But being a fellow Linux vet, we know that FOSS can mean some things are actually easier…but some are not.

yep and why I opted for an android server. I just felt it meshed easier with other android boxes and all my pc is used for is web interface.

LOL!
You made a conscious decision for your server…my ā€œdecisionā€ for using my Linux Mint machine is sort of happenstance after I became a Windows upgrade victim/refugee.

Actually I did a 180 today and removed the android server(had only 2gb ddr4) and was sluggish…so I swapped to a mini pc ive had sitting in the corner doing nothing and threw it ito service as my server. Decided on router usb as my download location for speed and all flying again…at least till I think of something else to do

PLEASE DON’T PUNT…JUST HUDDLE UP AND REGROUP!! Great String folks…keep up the great work… I love following yall’s ā€œresearching others researchā€! Got my interest up to get another streaming project going anyway. I’m about to update my LAN to Fiber to the desktop. Down with the Buffer, Full speed ahead!!!

Ok…more moves  Decided I needed another box for transcoding my vids etc…trying to stay cheap but functional. Will be testing this box tomorrow as a home for emby. I already have a 5TB raid storage prepared to act as storage, so mainly just wanting the 4gb ram here for a little speed.

Oh lordy,
And I’m just using a used eMachine with a used SSD and used 1TB 3.5 inch HD for media.
Less than $100 total for my Plex server.

Its possible I will basically keep my current setup but somehow change my recording place. Currently recording to a 1tb nvme ssd through my router usb connection. Works fine but I really prefer leaving my router out of the setup. The server is a mini pc running arch linux with 8gb ram and runs smooth with anything I throw at it so far. The secret is just getting samba all sorted for recordings. will know tomorrow when I do more stuff

me 2 I’ve hearing about jellyfin also

I’ve had some family obligations crop up, so I haven’t been able to spend time to set-up and tinker with Jellyfin like I want to.

Ive got emby running very nice right now. Using a 4tb external hdd in an enclosure to my router as storage. My mini arch pc is doing all the heavy lifting and androids are providing the user interface/viewing. Eventually will switch to a dedicated android samba server for storage and routing only as the arch pc is providing transcoding etc.

OK, so I’ve been using Jellyfin off and on for more than a year.
The one thing that I haven’t figured out (ok more that one, lol) is how to get the opensubtitles plugin actually get a subtitle to work.

I’m using Emby, and Jellyfin is based off of Emby so it functions almost the same. You first have to sign up for a free Opensubtitles account then you have to set up a recurring task to download subtitles in Scheduled Tasks. I have mine set to run once a week. The process is the same for other subtitle downloaders like Addic7ed and SubDB. Additionally, once you have a least one subtitle plugin installed, you can edit your libraries (movies, TV shows, etc) to download subtitles on the fly as you are watching the movie in just about any language. Pretty neat once you get it setup.

Thank you!

OK, I’ve been using Jellyfin now for 2-3 years. Plex has put remotely accessing behind a paywall, some of its advantage has disappeared.

After doing some reading on remotely accessing a Jellyfin server I found that Tailscale, basically a private VPN service works well for being able to do the trick. It’s actually fairly easy. You just sign up for an account install the free Tailscale app on the media server (I’m currently using a Linux distribution, Zorin 17.3 as my server. It’s probably even easier to install on a Windows machine.), and the Tailscale & Jellyfin apps on the Android or Fire devices you’d use. On the streaming devices, you type in the Tailscale address that is assigned to the server, sign in to the server with your user name & PW OR use your phone with Tailscale installed to use JF’s ā€œQuick Connectā€ feature and your content is availble outside your house.

Pretty cool and free…

I’m just a month in so far so good. Using centos 10 as my server to a 4k pro Onn-Google tv client. Have movies and tv shows up and working. Looking to setup my e-books on kindle not sure how to go about that. I am also in the process of getting my music set-up. I will report back when I get everything set up. Thanks you to all insiders and Troy for the help thru the years.

Dear elginherd,

I noticed elsewhere that you are having success running Jelly in Zorin Linux. I am trying to make a NAS server out of an older Intel nuc but I got convinced (by myself) that open media vault was the correct OS, which I think was wrong. Can you direct me to a tutorial that will help me to put jelly in on this nuc device? I just want to use it to stream movies and TV shows to my fire TV cube.

Thanks for your help!
