Jailbreak Nvidia Shield

Jailbreaking and Sideloading are terms used interchangeably but shouldn’t be.

True that is. To me rooting and jailbreaking are about on par and sideloading is different, however back when I came to Troypoint I asked troy about the term and here jailbreak is basically setting up an android box and sideloading it…I digress :joy:

You know what they say about opinions, so here is mine.

To me, jailbreaking has evolved into a general term to just mean altering a device to extend it’s capabilities, versus what the manufacturer intends with an un-altered device. In other words, sideloading and rooting are two levels/kinds of jailbreaking. Technology terms evolve and morph into slightly different meanings over time. I don’t think that is bad, it just means we’re moving forward. I’m with Troy on this one, I’m still under the assumption jailbreaking is sideloading, unless rooting is described in someone’s statement.

As said before, the term was misused to get attention selling firesticks on ebay to sound cool and buyers were probably just learning the terminology and thought they were saying the right definition.

It’s really different things. If you say you want to sideload your device everyone understands. If you say you want to jailbreak on here it leads to confusion to what you actually want to do.

So many things in here are confusing and misunderstood, that is why we ask everyone to give as many details as possible in their post/question/issue. Had that been done in the first place, we fix the problem and move on days ago lol.

To finish on jailbreaking, you all use it how you want. My opinion of what it has evolved into is above. Is it wrong from its original meaning? Yep, sure is. I just don’t see what the issue is with letting it naturally morph into what it has pretty much become now across the industry.

So be it as it may but if this site is here to educate people on the the ins and out of this technology we should use the correct terminology.

I don’t think you should include your Anti Apple bias on this subject. That is distracting from the topic and many of us like Apple products

I’ll never use the term again, ever, now that I know the origin came from apple. So there you go, you cured me, but you have a so many in the industry to convert.

I said it was my opinion when I posted it. I am allowed an opinion, this is America.

I agree that today “jailbreak” has evolved into sideloading or altering a android box to extend its capabilities. For me rooting is a whole other thing…but possible if one wanted to dig deeper.

Not trying to cure you but make a valid point. Just because everyone says it doesn’t make it true.

And technically i think it’s a hacker term for Apple. I dont think Jobs had anything to do with it.

I wouldn’t if I was you. I tried Linage os,but wasn’t impressed. You get a non removable message every time you reboot advising you that the boot loader is unlocked and maybe corrupt. After several trials and experiments I ended up with a brick!

Yes, I rooted my old Android TV devices made in China with no issues. Do not need to on Nvidia. Just have to get into developer mode or check okay in permissions for an app to do what I need it to do. Like Kodi in order for it to read my USB stick I have to go in to Permissions - Files and Media - Allow. Sometimes you have to go back again (if you still see that is says "Don’t Allow.)

I believe the term “jailbreak“ was created for bypassing Apple’s strict policy side loading apps or making modifications to their devices. I used to JB my iPhone and iPods going way back to the original devices.
