Troy just recently posted that issues related to Amazon devices not working properly while Surfshark VPN is running has been resolved. Well, I’m happy to confirm that the issue I posted here had been resolved as well! 
I guess that gives me enough reason to keep my Surfshark VPN.

I have a similar issue with SS and my firesticks. when i firdt open you tube it opens and works fine. However if i leave the app and try to go back it just keeps spooling and never opens. I get around it by resetting the firestick each time this happens and the next time i open you tube it works fine. I have not tried split tunneling to resolve the issue, but never once had this occur until i switched from ip vanish to SS.
