Is Internet Speed Upgrade Worth It?

I know, I know, old subject. But interesting examples. I’ve had IVP for years and really didn’t think that much about speed degradation. I recently added on SS just to see if there was a difference. Now, I only get 25mBps from my ISP but generally get less. So I have 3 IPTV players, TM, Sparkels and Smarters. On each one I play the same channel and look for buffering and really don’t get much change with VPN on or off. The one thing that got my attention is on Analiti testing IVP my speeds are anywhere from 18 to 22. Testing on SS I went up to 32! More than I pay for. However, I still get buffering with SS on SOME channels. I was watching FB on the channel closest to me San Francisco, buffering. I switched to Dothan Alabama and it’s been smooth so far. My biggest question is this, I can pay for more speed from my ISP, up to 100 but will this make a difference? My cost is obscene now at 25 which costs me $60/month. The speed works quite well for streaming but if I could help with less buffering while using my IPTV it would be worth the costs. I know there are many articles written about speed and generally answer all the questions, but was wondering if anyone has notice this. Now there are those out there that get lightning speed internet but was really addressing those who have speeds just above dial up. Thanks

It looks like you are operating on the lowest possible download speeds. Yes, it can work, but expect buffering. Especially if you have more than one device connected at a time and if you are watching anything with a high data rate such as 4K. Weekends and holidays can also be problematic.

Btw, I agree paying for more speed than you need is a waste of money. If you have a house full of kids (gamers) and internet users. Then, imho, you would need a minimum of 100 speeds. If it just you and maybe your spouse in the house. Then 50 speed should be fine.

Yes!!!

your phone can burn bandwith more than you might realise there are apps that will show you whats using bandwidth in your house sometimes turning the big users off will help

i have 250gb with fibre and i still get buffering its not always your speed that gives you buffering it can also be the source

You can buy a LOT of cellular bandwidth (speed) for $60 a month!

It’s almost always your source. 250 with Fibre, Cable or POTS is still 250. Bottom line is you won’t find websites giving you that unless you download Linux and their servers used to be fast. Straight to your ISP, you need to get your full bandwidth you paid for but it pretty much ends there. Like I love to tell the ISP’s at my door to try and get me to change, So you tell me Cable is shared and Fibre is dedicated? Yeah, so what. You either get the bandwidth or you don’t in which case you’re on the phone with your ISP. I laugh at them and say, what am I going to do, watch a movie faster?

I live very rural so there are options butI have a friend who has his internet thru AT&T but has caps , so his is good. Starlink was an option but too expensive and it has it’s problems. Going to bump up my speed to a min of 50 and see if that works

50 should be more than enough.

50 is just fine as long as you get the same using your VPN if you use one.

Imagine your internet connection as a highway. You can’t speed up your internet connection just like you can’t speed up a loaded highway. To much traffic on either slows stuff down , so more internet speed will not help you one bit. But it will drain your wallet a lot faster . Do as you wish it’s your choice . This information came from a computer builder when I asked him the exact question years ago . Its the internet traffic not your internet speed

My guess is most of the rural and suburbanites will see an improvement about January 4th.

Not available in my area

Something you know I don’t? Would be nice. This is the unfortunate side of having a small , family owned phone company. They have been stuck at the same rates and speed for years. However when I first moved up here in 1997 all we had for a number of years was dial-up. So definitely a much needed improvement

Just speculating people will be going back to work and school. So, the local airwaves might not be so crowded.

Guess if you can stream Youtube without too much problems, you should be fine.
You can also test different formats with youtube to see what quality streams you can use before you suffer buffering

Now that really is a problem.
You have to have 5G in your area…

I get on avereage 100 down and 60 up speeds with my phone…

I have Verizon only because it’s the only service that I get good phone reception. No 5g though

The problem with fixed cell internet is that phone traffic eats up band width and is prioritized over the home internet use.
If there are enough towers in your area, that might not be a big deal. It did prove to be a major problem at my location in a small city in WV near I-64.
