I have a little story to tell everybody about a hack on my credit card. I get a phone call from a guy, Oriental voice, this guy said he’s from my credit card company and asking me if I try to fly out of Florida. I advise him no I didn’t. He tries talking real quick to me and then he asked for the three security numbers on back of card. I told him no, then I clowned him real bad and hung up. 30 minutes later I get a charge on my credit card, Citibank, $487 Auto parts. I get online with my Citibank and found out the charge was at a big Acura dealership in San Francisco. I contacted him advising the fraud and he squashed it online order. Luckily he gave me the guys address and phone number who used my credit card number. I called the number and it was a small auto shop in San Francisco and the guy who answered same Oriental voice from before trying to get my three security numbers. I told him I call the cops and going to the shop right now. Well I really did not call the cops but I figured he wouldn’t do it again. Wrong! Next day did it again. I’m 65 and this is the first time I’ve ever had anybody use my card for fraud. So lock the card, order another one like I should have first place. But now I wonder how he got my three number security to use it online. Pain in the butt changing all the reoccurring automatic charges.
Thanks for the information
Man, that really sucks! Nothing is safe anymore. I have had my card hacked several times in the past 5 years or so. I have canceled more cards in the past 5 years than I have had my whole life. It is a pain in the a$$ to do so. Gets old real quick. I watch everything now and check my bank accounts religiously several times a week. Hopefully this was a one off for you and won’t happen soon again.
This is, exactly, why I absolutely refuse to pay for Real Debrid with a regular credit card. I signed up for a Paypal pre-loaded Debit Mastercard. And for Premiumize I use the Paypal option.
I use a disposable master card for everything online, which needs payment approval per transaction
Revolut is also good, you can create a disposable 1 time use card in the app.
@Dminor9, Happy Anniversary….
If you ever get a call like this, never answer any questions, say you are busy and hang up.
Call your bank / credit card company and tell them what happened.
Thank you . I did not know. I don’t even know how long I have been on this forum.
I have unknown callers SILENCED on my iPhone and rarely do I get a V/M from a spammer. If it’s legit and important, they will leave a message. I like the @JerryJ PayPal idea and previously discussed PRIVACY idea. Thanks for sharing.
Most cards can now be turned off online. At least the debit cards can. Just turn them off. Turn on later when you need them. Only use cards that can be turned off.
Also goes for your credit report. Unless you need to build credit activity to buy a house or expensive auto. Turn that thing off if you don’t need it. Usually costs nothing to turn it off (don’t be faked into thinking you need to pay a fee to turn off your credit report. ). Had my credit report turned off at all three bureaus for years, and my credit number is still pretty good.
Capital (fill in the number) offers virtual cards that can easily be turned on/off for every vendor you use.
@Cousinbrucie1…. Happy Anniversary, and ….“I represent the Troypoint Guild, the Troypoint Guild, the Troypoint Guild. And in the name of the Troypoint Guild, I wish to welcome you to Streaming Land"….
I use PayPal for everything but if the seller doesn’t use PayPal, I use the virtual card from my credit card company.
Paypal offers a pre-paid Mastercard debit card. It works like any other Mastercard, which most anyplace accepts. I just pre-load the funds on the PP website and make the payment with those funds. For my Real Debrid subscription I loaded $20 and made the payment. If anyone tries to use my card number, the most that they can get is the $3 plus some change that was left over in the account. Even Venmo offers a pre-loaded Mastercard debit card. Just load the funds on the card and send the money.
About two years ago I had something really weird happen using PayPal and I won’t use them again. My wife had the opportunity to by a doctor’s scale for about 25% of the regular selling price so we bought it. I used PayPal routed through them to charge to my Capital One CC. The scale was never delivered to us at our address. We waited nearly 3 weeks when it was shipped and delivered according to the shipper 5 days after we ordered it. I let PayPal know since we ordered it through them with it being directed to charge on my Capital One CC. They told me I had to go to Capital One first which I did and they reimbursed me immediately for the money, nearly $100 on a $400 scale. Here’s where it got weird, Capital One after reimbursing me, went after PayPal and made them reimburse them, so PayPal came back after me saying the shipper had shipping and delivery showing at my address so I had to reimburse them. I refused giving them the reason it never arrived here. They took the word of the shipper and denied my refusal so I sent back to them I denied their refusal of my request and still wasn’t paying them back. Got a call from PayPal saying it would go on my credit record and they needed my authorization to charge it to my PayPal account, I refused again. I asked the guy, are you morons? I’ve told you and Capital One I didn’t receive it and if I didn’t receive it I’m not paying you back for something we didn’t receive. As it stands now, they dropped it as a bad debt, never went on my credit report and I won’t EVER use PayPal again. I’ve still got some email correspondence from them about this as a reminder to never use them again! They truly must be a bunch of MORONS!!!
PayPal is just like any business. They chase after the money given corporate lawyer policies. Not total idiots, but they are machines doing what they are told. Money overrules customer service always.
@AJS1 You can actually go into your Citibank App and lock your card with a sliding button. To use your card just slide the button to allow.
So what is your three digit number. Asking for a friend.
That’s VERY unusual. PayPal almost always sides with the buyer in cases like this, especially when you go through your credit card or e-bay (if the sale was through ebay).
