Google Cracks Down on Sideloading Apps from Unverified Developers

Good point. Pretty soon we’ll all be back to 2015!

It is for now but that could easily chance .

Unfortunately, all Buzz boxes except the Linux box have GOOGLE on them.

According to Troy’s email it will, since it has Google on it. I have one.

I was responding to question if the Nividia Pro will be affected.

MIne is Android TV and AOSP mixed in. P6L

The Buzz devices don’t run fully certified ATV OS more of an hybrid OS and the Manufacturer controls OTA updates so I don’t think they will be affected like certified devices running ATV.

Seems that no matter what Google and Amazon decide to do, some techies will figure out a way around it. As long as we have Kodi, players like TiviMate, Sparkle etc. it “FEELS” like we should be OK.

You will see alot of top end non-certified boxes come out when that happens just wait .

Chris Waite makes a good point, Google isn’t banning sideloading. Just the apps wanting Play Store approval. They’re saying if you download from a source (think APK Time or Unlinked) that is not Play Protected, what ever happens is on you. Video attached…

About AOSP devices , which are they?? And arent they the answer to just go w/them ?

Ya got alist of the AOSP devices. And are they “economically” feasable for the peons ?

I am not sure of all the available AOSP devices. The Buzz P6L ultimate that I have is a mix of both Android stock and Open Source. Not sure who might be best to ask about this.

@JSRFrench What browser do you recommend?

Miki, isn’t the Nvidia Shield a combo of Android stock and Open Source?

Not that I know of. I’m pretty sure it’s straight stock.

In the shield, Google loads a layer of closed source services over the stock AOSP, including Google Play services. On top of that Nvidia provided open source code, binary pkgs, and drivers to devs.

So yes, it’s a mixed bag of open and closed source packages under that shield hood.

However, 9.2 experience update supposedly broke certification for many users.

As far as I knew my 2019 shield pro was Android TV 9.0 (pie)

OS9 Pie was release version. You must have never updated system software through nvidia’s experience update program.

I’m on OS11, Red Velvet Cake. However I never updated my software beyond the experience 9.1.1 version. I may consider updating to 9.2 if I can see more evidence that it breaks Google certification through Play.

I’ve never had a problem with my Tivo 4K streamer…

Why more people are not using them amazes me…
