For those using torrents this helps ensure your security>>
That would be socket 5 protection and depending on your vpn there is p2p protection which is torrent protection.
Everyone should be using a torrent client that encrypts there data and pool. Deluge is a good choice for that.
Tx for your input @TP-Dracoo . I thought this might be an excellent article for those learning the ropes. I love these for the basics.
Have fun and STREAM ON.
Just having your vpn while on sites to get torrents will help. Doing a deep dive into the client downloader is the second step. The problem with torrents is how this data is accessed and downloaded. While your VPN is on magnet link to your client downloader, or download the torrent to a file. Now when the client downloader is gaining the data the biggest issue is that access of info, its getting it from a pool of seeders, there is where they get your info regardless of vpn. Also people like WB track some torrents and id’s. To prevent this is to get a full encryption torrent downloader otherwise a vpn is useless in this issue.
I know precisely how torrents work tx Dracoo. That was all my site did was torrents. This was for some basic stuff. We always encrypted the headers which was part of the options in uTorrent for example, to ensure our security. But naturally there are those capable of getting around what ppl do. Baby steps like in this article sure get the ball rolling for some. Just goes to show, there is so much to learn.
I’m not fighting you lol, just adding to the info. NOW GO PLAY NICE!
??? Oh I know you’re not fighting nor am I. Sorry if it came across that way. I was simply enjoying the exchange of information. You have a lot of experience with network. So always glad to read your replies. Hopefully others will understand the info and learn from it.
I appreciate both of your knowledge and need all I can get! Especially when it comes to Torrents and such. A boat load of stuff to take in!
For those of us with a very limited understanding of what you are discussing, what does all this mean? Is downloading torrent files with a VPN not safe?
Downloading torrents with a vpn is safe and recommended. I was referring to when you actually use a torrent downloader you need a full encryption
The original article I referred to, gives you instruction on basically making it so that if your VPN is off and you start up an app using torrents the VPN will start as well, “binding” them together.
Which is a must when downloading Torrents or anything else. VPN must be on! TY for this @Miki , @TP-Dracoo
Ah, OK, I get it now. Thanks.
Great information Miki, thanks for finding and sharing. A burning question that I have regarding torrents. How much better can these torrent clients, etc, really be over Real Debrid and the streaming apps that we always talk about. I have never really played around with them, but Real Debrid has such a huge database, I just don’t understand what the advantage is, I guess…
Thank you…that makes a lot of sense. But why would someone want to use these over a streaming app with Real-Debrid or equivalent? Is the quality better? Do you think these are safer than the streaming apps we use?
Its just ease of use. Torrent downloading died down after streaming services came top tier plus alot of torrent sites got nabbed or put down. So things like real debrid and streaming started to be king. Real debrid is a hoster it stores the data you just access it from an ecrypted pathway. Stremio does this but its directly from the torrent and not encrypted which is why you need a vpn. Its just basically netflixing your torrents instead of downloading them, decrypting in a client downloader and storing them. Its easer this way, fress up space and can be more secure if done right
TP-Dracoo said it perfecrly. In my opinion nothing is truly safe anymore, but also imho torrents are much safer than streaming. We never bothered with vpns 30 yrs ago heck encryption was just getting a foothold and for most sites a firewall was a must. Encrypting a header made the torrent unbreakable by anybody but the most advanced techs and agencies and unless things have changed that’s still true today. Yes back then getting warning letters was almost a monthly thing but that was from the MPAA, and we just threw those letters into the circular file.
Bottom line, nothing is truly secure, but simple things like encryption and VPNs are a good start. Oh I forgot, real debrid and premium servers can be very secure, if done right. I use RD daily.
Going back to Miki’s initial posting, it looks as if the instructions in the article apply only to a torrent client loaded on a PC. I could not find any of the equivalent settings on either my VPN or torrent client on my tablet (I use PIA and Bittorrent on an Android Samsung). Nor does PIA have any such settings on the Stick.
Did I miss something?
Thank you for the great description of how Torrents work, you too @Miki . Your both a well of info on this.
From the article:
The best way to keep your data private while downloading torrents is to bind your client to the VPN directly.
If you must use an alternative client, try to find one that supports this feature. Otherwise, it’s a lot harder to maintain your privacy.
Bah hum-bug!
Miki, I believe you thinking this would be good for those learning the ropes. My perspective differs as to its practical usefulness.
