Best streaming boxes with wifi 6 that actually work!

I have a Mecool KM6 deluxe 4gb/64 version which I’ve been using for a couple years now. This past week we upgraded our home network from 400 to 1gb with Spectrum.
The mecool KM6 specs is 802.11ax capable yet I see no speed improvement from when we had 400 service. The device will run at 1 gb via ethernet but wifi at that speed is a no go. Has anyone else had this issue or any idea of a setting I have to change? Also can you recommend any good streaming boxes that are capable of 1gb speeds via wifi? thanks!

I am definitely jealous of your new internet speed! I would love to get Gigabit Fiber, but they don’t offer where I live yet. How close is your box to router when testing speeds? To get top of the line wifi speed with any device, it would probably have to be right next to it. Every several feet likely will degrade the speed. The best thing to consistently get the most use of your high-end network is still going to be ethernet. Wifi7 will eventually give it a run for its money I think, but just something about the dependability of wired…
Anyway, I have a KM6 deluxe that I get almost 500 (my internet speed) via wifi when it sits close to the router. I don’t know if the wifi6 wireless card installed in the KM6 is the strongest out there, but I think it is above average versus other boxes claiming to have the “6” designation. The ones I can think of that might be better would be something like the new Fire TV cubes. (and maybe top end Formuler boxes or Buzz boxes?)

Thanks for your reply. I realize distance is one of the main limiting factors to wifi yet at 400 I was getting around 250 in our farthest room about 60 ft away. Upgraded to 1gb with new router and the wifi speed is not much different. Sometimes reaches 300-325 but that’s it. I believe the KM6 is not living up to it’s specs because it will give me an ethernet speed around 750 to this room yet too difficult to run the cable there. Will be looking for more capable boxes.

I completely understand and am curious to hear your results of finding a better wifi box. Once a box declares wifi6 capabilities, we all assume it lives up to that standard. Maybe that isn’t always the case, as you are hinting in this thread. I have definitely soured to Mecools over time. Not necessarily for your issue, just other issues that drove me away from them. It wouldn’t surprise me if their hardware wasn’t as good as advertised.

Mine’s been quite reliable with no issues up until now since not seeing any improved wifi speeds with 1 gb.

Your not going to see any more of an increase than you already have. But now you can support twice as many devices.

Please explain your statement…

Anything wifi 7 capable is supreme as far as speed and distance. Asus, tp-link to name a couple. Tried both and prefer tp-link for ease of use. Actually able to set vpn up myself.

And I look forward to when all ISPs actually have WiFi 7. Heck we haven’t gotten 6 here yet, but 5.4 gives me all the speed I need. I never game and I’m not performing bandwidth intensive functions. Just simple streaming and surfing.

It will be a while before streaming boxes make the full switchover to wifi7 though. I think only phones have it that I have seen? Obviously routers do, but wifi7 routers are super super expensive at the moment.

My KM6 Deluxe speed test on wifi, in the room directly above my front room node of my mesh wifi. Probably around 15 feet away from it. My internet service is 500Mbps, this test is without VPN.

Why does the Box matter for Wifi Speed? I thought it’s all about your Wifi and has nothing to do with the Box. And to back up my Statement if I do an Analiti test on my 6 year old T95Z Plus Boxes, my ONN 4K, and my ONN 4K Pro I’m getting the same 380 MB Speeds (Plus or minus a 10 MB range). Why all these posts about what Box gives you faster speed. I’m not buying it

I don’t understand it either. WiFi antennas and modules are pretty much a standard setup these days. Obviously if you want the best of the best start at around the $150 mark, although many budget devices do just as well for basic needs like Streaming.

Streaming devices indicates in their specifications whether it’s 802.11ax (wifi 6) capable or not. Just like lan ports. Some only allow 100 mbps and others 1 gbps.

I think you might be confusing Ethernet and Wifi. The Ethernet cards in the boxes either support 100Mb or up to 1000 MB (1Gig) BUT that has nothing to do with Wifi. Your Wifi speed is dependent upon the speed you get from your provider

Do you know for an absolute fact that (for example) a Firestick Max has the same exact wifi module (brand/performance, etc) installed as the KM6 deluxe, Z11 Pro Max, the Onn 4k Pro or any other Wifi6 box/stick? The OP’s concern was if the KM6’s wifi was living up to it’s marketed callout of wifi6 speed.

I don’t know much about the manufacturers/brands of these modules that are installed in streaming devices, but I am thinking the more expensive wifi 6 boxes may use a little higher end module that may show faster speed and possibly better stability? If I’m wrong, I have no problem admitting that, just trying to learn more about this. I can’t recall us talking in much detail about it.

No I don’t know about the spec’s in all the boxes but because 1. I’ve always assumed nothing in the device determines your wifi speed as that is determined by your provider, type (Fiber vs high speed), proximity of box location to router etc… and 2. When I test my 2, 6 year old T95Z Cheap China Boxes, My Onn 4K, My ONN 4K Pro, and an older firestick 4K I am getting virtually the same speed within 10 MB and that is very close. Of course these are all lower end cheap boxes so I don’t know about higher end boxes being able to provide higher speed wifi vs my lower end boxes and I’m not going to assume that if I pay $200 for a Shield I’m going to get better wifi performance and the OP shouldn’t either IMO

The Shield doesn’t have Wifi 6 capabilities (my biggest complaint about it), but I know what you mean. I’m going to do some research on these. I am very curious now.

My 2019 Shield Pro certainly does have IPv6. I leave it turned off as my ISP is not yet doing WiFi 6. Settings>Network and Internet> scroll to the bottom. “Enable IPv6”
