According to our poll, most TROYPOINT fans prefer Android TV over AOSP (Android Open Source Project). What if we could install Android TV on these cheap generic boxes? We can…kind of!
In this video I’m providing my first impressions after flashing Android TV 14 firmware to the X88 Pro X5M. Here are a few videos that I’ve released regarding this box over the past couple of weeks These will give you a good idea of what this box looks like before I flashed the ROM.
This is not a setup video showing how to flash a ROM on the box…that will be coming later this week. Lots of trial and error on my end to get this to work and I will try to put this into an easy-to-understand video that all of you can use.
Another reason people want to do this is to get rid of possible malware that could be on the firmware that comes with these China boxes.
I’ve done this in the past with other ROM developers and never released a video tutorial because there were always features missing. In the video below, I take you step-by-step through the setup after flashing it to see if there are problems with the device.

Even more possibilities, nice! I would be more interested in flashing an older android tv rom such as 11, or 12 though. Hopefully that’s something Troy can show us in the future.
The roms or aosp are open source and should not be an issue with google meddling into what you are doing. And we are all up to something …. j/k but “freedom to choose”
Comrades these slimbox rom options are amazing. Looks like a lot of fun and can completely customize your device to how you like. I think my biggest problem would be finding time to watch tv instead of customizing my devices lol.
Some of these AOSP boxes will have better specs and some can’t get Onn Boxes as they live outside the USA. Agree with your comment though…most people don’t need this.
This is awesome. I have a need to send a tv box overseas & the Onn boxes are a crap shoot on whether they will work after setup in the US. This is a fantastic alternative, & like you said you can get some better hardware specs (in some cases) than what’s available in an Onn system. This was worth the price of getting patron access. Thanks!!!
Simbox makes great firmwares probably better than OE. The only downside is when a new update gets released it has to be forced via burn tool. It’s recommended to be wiped on every update as well. I’ve done many Slim firmwares. My only downside is the updates which sucks.
Great stuff Troy! Looking forward to more fun to be had with the 4 android AOSP boxes, all android 9, sitting in my drawer. Seems that you had fun as well
This looks as if it is going to be as satisfying as the hack on my Fire Cube 3 and Firestick Max.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. If everything works why mess with it. I could understand updating if there was a feature not working. Most of these don’t provide updates anyway so not like we are missing out on anything.
Troy this is an amazing video , thank you for your work. Looking forward to the next video. This brings android tv like to AOSP . Can’t wait for updates !
