Advice on upgrading to a new router

I agree with respect to speed. Having a very fast connection is only good if you really can use it and most people barely can use 100 megabits unless you’re mining crypto!

Post your ISP’s router / modem model number.

You may have option to put this into Modem mode, connect and use you new router via Ethernet cable.

no make or model on the device itself:

s/n: B52239055930 (PC20??)

You should be able to identify the router you have from this list

they are pushing mobile phones. i asked earlier if they do landlines which i can use as a fax. they said they don’t but the modem itself is a data /voice modem.

Thanks everyone! i have figured out how to connect my new router.
I spoke to another Spectrum support person. the advice on the router was fantastic! thanks again!

asked about this with support…they do landlines!

I have a TP Link Deco 5 mesh net router. I have 300mbps Spectrum Internet and have Surf Shark VPN with no issues. I’ve had this setup for about 3 years now. I bought it for $149.00 on eBay.

Link to user guide - looks like it was a simple setup, page 3.

Re Landlines
I believe it’s a VOIP service over your internet connection and not landline using copper cables - as shown on installation guide page 3.
The UK are going to this tech and will end traditional copper landlines

Gratefully, I have a window from the House thats “Line-Of-Sight” to the Shop, which makes it so much easier.

I feel for you DEEPLY. When I had a UBITQUITI Dream Machine until it just crapped out…I was able to change my radio signals and block this type of piggybacking from my network. It displayed all things on my network at all times. The two infamous I do not forget were under my Chevrolet and another truck brand… And through the same router I created a floorplan to isolate certain devices and activities. i.e all your cams on a network; all streaming on another network and so on. I do not know which one of the recommended routers allow to change your radio frequency but this is what I recommend against this menacing neighbour. Make sure you also have multi-factor authentication added to Surfshark and change the password often.

I first tried out this router as I wanted the more expensive but super fast Wi-Fi 6E but I got so much interference (especially to a 2nd floor) I returned this one:
[TP-Link AXE16000 Quad-Band WiFi 6E Router (Archer AXE300)]

I then went with this one and it has been amazing albeit expensive - I also have about 45 smart home devices so needed the extra juice:
[NETGEAR Nighthawk 12-Stream WiFi 6E Router (RAXE500) | AXE11000]

YES!, just what i had for several years. r2d2 lived well past its prime.

Now it is a doorstop. I have a router now that is provided by my ISP which is similar in a lot of ways. The company is from America. No it does not have the ability to change frequencies but decent. But yes for sure make sure you seriously shop around and check for all mesh abilities as in hotspots or extenders. Many routers offer not only wrt config but provide their own VPN. Look around for OPEN BOX or refurbished with warranty for the higher end…have to agree with your ISP about the NETGEAR but yes the ASUS is comparable. If you had a serious specialist available they can install a program that does all the Ubitquiti does available to upload on a DESKTOP. If this jack is chronic I would seriously look into a specialist for the purpose of securing all data as one device can leak to the entire network which then gives access to banking info…SCARY but true. Stay safe sunshine. Encrypted Keyboards software and hardware essential.

I have found using the router that spectrum or any other company give are pretty basic. I personally bought Decos mesh routers on amazon they hook up easy to your existing modem and work great! Check amazon they have a variety “mesh router” depending on size of home sf. coverage. I have have around 20-30 devices connected to my WiFi. Works great!

A little late to the conversation but yes i have a “landline” with spectrum as well. I hooked up my printer/fax to that way too.

I am sure you probably know but its not really a landline but internet based. Its the same feed as your wifi. So if internet is down so is the phone service.

Will getting your own router increase your speed or just give a better signal?

Yeah I would say it’s not landline it’s like VoIP it was just easy to say that but technically it’s not correct. But also wanted to comment I’ve had no internet and my phone still worked at times. So They are both separate… The answer to your question about getting your own router most of the router capabilities that ISP providers provide in their combo modem/router aren’t that great. I’ve lived here for 10 years and I’ve started with DSL with CenturyLink and I even bypassed their system and added my own router. Call bridging. I’m up to maybe my fourth router added to the system and now have a TP link AX 1800 Wi-Fi 6 router The chip set in it is great and can handle much more than what isp providers combo will provide That’s why they keep changing their combos as time goes by but never quite make the cut for somebody who has maybe 10 devices or more but I haven’t had the experience with theirs because I like to save money so I just get their modem and add my own router I have more control over my router then their systems that were used to be locked up more. One thing to your question though that came up is in the TP-Link router I have you can prioritize devices so you will be getting the full speed that it’s willing to give you over other devices. The AX1800 I can set a guest network to be turned on through Alexa The higher AX routers with TP link you can actually do that prioritizing through Alexa instead of going into the router. Hope I have helped peace out

Interesting. I have had my cable still work while the internet is down but i don’t remember my phone working.

It could have but i remeber them as being connected that way. I’ll check the next time it goes down. Which is hopefully a while from now. :crossed_fingers:

Not sure if the whole reply was for me or the other parts of the thread. Its been a while since i replied to it.

Thanks for the info nonetheless.

I have a ASUS AX3000, and have wifi at over 200Mbps download through out the home. However, with onn 4K Pro connected to my tv (hdmi cable), I get only about 50Mbps download. Sometimes the speed is less that 30Mbps. Any suggestions to help the speed with onn and tv?
