It’s been awhile since I’ve used a Firestick, but I have had the same situation when trying to add a USB to ONN boxes.
Here’s what I’ve found. Forwhatever reason, some drives just don’t work. So try another drive if possible. Also, did you completely wipe the drive? I’ve had drives that have worked after wiping, setting up a single partition & then formatting.
Finally, try another OTG cable.
Elginherd I have tried two different OTG cables from two different manufactures. I did format the USB twice once with RUFUS as in one of Troy’s videos and then again with AOME. I do have another 64 GB USB that is not formatted yet I will try that one to see if it is recognized. Thanks!
I just tried my 2nd 64GB USB. That worked I followed the prompts to format it. I want to use this to record shows. Do I use the firestick setup menu to format this drive under the USB section or do I leave the format that is on it now to be able to move apps. If I do that will I be able to record to it from my player app? Thanks!
Did you completely wipe the drive, though?
Formatting a drive does not do that.
You should format the usb stick while in your FS. You then have one of two options, using it to move over apps to clear your internal memory or use it to record to or move other data over. You cannot do both. If you are successful in recording directly the the USB, stick, please advise what you used to do because I to date, it seems nobody has been actually able to do that. ADM won’t and should. I’ve asked many times for a shout out to someone that was recording. Nothing so it seems it’s not working.
I did through the firestick USB settings. I was able to setup a folder and record a test show from TiVimate.

I am going to try and setup a partition in my other USB and then format it through the firestick settings if it sees it.
I was able to record to it.
My FS would not recognize my other 64GB USB. I am not sure why this one was. I installed it then got a message saying that it was not the right format so I followed the prompts from the FS. I then went into the settings menu the USB was there. Within the menu it had an option to format with a note saying "if i wanted to use this other places to select format. I then setup a folder using x-plorer. Then did an instant record to that folder I just setup from TiViMate it worked. I am going to try and get this other USB working fingers crossed.
