Adding OTG cable to my FireStick Max 4k

I finally got some OTG cables and have been reading and watching the videos. I do have a few questions. I have watched the video.

  1. What is the recommended size as I know it must be Fat32 but I just got a great deal on 5 64’s and didn’t realize or forgot that due to Fat32 limitations, 32 GB is the maximum.

  2. I did finally format a very old Lexar 4 gb just to see if it was recognized and it was.

  3. Is there a way to get around this limitation and use a 64 GB as Amazon recommends 128 GB Usb 3. Mine are USB 2.

  4. I didn’t look at the ADB command video yet but I will and wondering if it can be installed on the 4k stick?

I would expect to use it as internal but might change my mind. I also learned that you can format it again as external and it can be read on a computer again as when formatted as internal, it could not be.

Thoughts, answers and I hope in some small way this might help someone else as well.

Ok Update! I kept reading about this and seeing more videos and using larger drives like the ones I have, 64 - 128. I’ve plugged in the 64 GB again and it recognized it this time. I formatted it as device and am moving a test app to it. Not sure why it didn’t see it before but now it does. Well it works, not as fast as direct internal but that is to be expected I suppose and I’ve read that many times to keep the apps to stream etc on the Stick, not usb. I will just carry on trying to move some of the apps like the Amazon bloat apps as per the Troypoint video. Maybe get a USB 3 stick if it will in fact perform faster on this.

There are several ways to format a drive larger than 32GB to FAT32. One of the simplest is to use AOMEI Partition Assistant (free edition). You can download it here: Download Magic Free Partition Manager Software - AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard

After downloading and installing the software, launch it (with flash drive in computer). You’ll see “rows” that represent all the drives on your computer. Select the one that corresponds to your flash drive. Right-click on the “row” and select “Format Partition”. A dialog window will open allowing you to assign a label, select a File System, and cluster size. Assign whatever label you want (if any), and select FAT32 for the File System.

Click OK to close the dialog window and then click on the “Apply” checkmark in the upper left side of the main menu. When the operation is complete, you should have a FAT32 formatted flash drive.

Sorry, I was typing my reply as you were typing yours saying you solved the problem. I doubt that switching to a USB3 flash drive will be any faster, as the USB jack on all the OTG cables I’ve seen are USB2.

Or you could just use a 4K Max and with a powered otg hub, 128 GB Sandisk USB 3.0 drive, just plug it in and let the max do the work. Now with the 3rd gen cube it also has the option to format to NTFS, making it even nicer to use and temoving some limitations. There are Vids out there showing you can even use a 4tb drive, but I only use a 16GB for apps and I never record anything.

Thank you both. I will consider the hub in the future of course and glad this works. I did find out that I did not have to format my Usb Stick outside on my computer as the Firestick did it by itself. I don’t have a keyboard or any other device yet to use a hub but I imagine it’s a great way to add other things as I might want to. For the computer I believe EaseUS todo back up, free version may do that as well. It let me clone HD’s to new SDD’s. That part was free. * I purchased the 64 GB because the price was great, 5 for $23 CDN. Nice deal from Amazon.

I use a 128 GB no issues.

Yes, I can see now that this is no problem at all. I don’t need much for apps but glad I can use my new sticks. My next test will be formatting one for internal (The way I want to use it so things might run better) and formatting another for external to see about downloading things onto it. Yes I realize the apps not on the stick will no longer be there, but that’s ok as my main apps will be on the stick. I will offload the larger ones that I want to keep but don’t use often.
I wonder if there will be an error when removing the internal usb stick as the apps are not there but the OS must surely realize that.

Not sure exactly what you’re attempting but you cannot use a hub and have two usb drives attached, one for internal or one for external. The Max will only recognize one at a time. There is a proper way to “eject” the drive in the “My Fire Tv” settings section.

Yes, I know that. I don’t have a hub. Only the cable. I would just simply swap in the other stick and see what happens. Yes, I am aware of the eject and one of the few who actually use that on a PC when most people just pull it out. Decades of IT makes me take Murphy’s law very seriously

Perfect Wiz. I look forward to your experiment and the results. I wonder what would happen if you eject a stick programmed just for apps then put in one formatted for recording, then, say at night, set up a timed recording, then it records something to watch the next day. Good luck.

I don’t need this of course but with 4 more brand new 64gb sticks I am in the interest of science wondering how this might or might not work. Like the Styx song, clearly I have too much time on my hands

Ya Wiz this is a great idea and now you got me wondering. I may need to buy another Sandisk 3.0 USB drive. grrrr. Always with something to learn.

The fire stick will recognize each USB stick separately just as long as you properly eject it and properly insert it. Sometimes it won’t recognize it right away and you may have to restart your fire stick to get it to recognize the stick but it does work I’ve done it. Now that with that being said I do have a memory stick that the fire stick will not recognize anymore no matter how I format it. I don’t know if it’s just a bad memory stick or what but it won’t recognize anymore but I have tried another sticks and been very successful.

I guess what I’d like to know, is, did anyone use a YSB Drive formatted for internal and then another for external, in otherwords one formatted for apps, eject it, then load one for recordingds and set it up to record overnight, then access it and see if it works.

Well that is what I am about to try but I will try and record something while it’s playing as I’ve never actually recorded or set a recording for overnght. Not sure the apps would even do that. I also want to try and set up my 4k using the adb Tutorial as I got two cables in the package. First things first. But I will do that shortly.

Tivimate will set up a recording for you. Although I’ve never tried it as I don’t record anything. But for some customers and friends they want a recording option. Tx Wiz, appreciate your experimenting and telling us.

Working with this. When I eject the internal drive, it actually tells me what apps won’t be available which is nice. I did put in back in and everything worked fine. I formatted another stick for external, went to Film + that has a download option in it plus an link for Download with ADB that I don’t have. I am looking for a download manager now. Most from Amazon say they are not compatible and am thinking of the one from the play store onto my phone then using an app to side load it.
I don’t have Tivimate but see a Troypoint video on the installation of it. I don’t intend to buy anything for the sake of testing and scheduling is a premium part it says. If I can just download it that would be fine. The film plus didn’t seem to do anything. I see USB drive on x-plore but clicking on it does nothing. I am thinking user error here and more knowledge needed. First things first, get a download manager. Stremio doesn’t seem to allow for that.

Awesome and thank you. I will try and get this. It seemed my USB stick is there after a reboot. I can see it now using x-plore.

I don’t see any download for this other than Darwin, Linux and W32. Unless I am missing something, I will have to keep looking.
