Iām a Linux MInt apologist.
That said, similar pieces have been written for years, and guess what?
Windows still dominates the business & personal sectors.
Even Troy Here of Troypoint, the head guru of Alternative Digital Lifestyles, is in the Windows orbit.
One reason is that there are so many OSās & flavors of those OSās that have strong constituencies within Linux users that there is not really a dominant version that people gravitate toward.
To me that means variety.
Difference between the mint and the zoran? As far as the windows type feel and the use of Google chrome?
Mint uses the cinnamon deskrop(old school gnome) and zorin has several switchable desktops based on the new gnome.
Some usefull info on Linux;
The subject matter of Linux operating system to replace windows has lots of information on the internet, āLinux for Dummiesā !
Iām going to have to read on this information myself, educate myself, as I have a HP computer thatās still in excellent shape however it cannot be upgraded to Win 11.
chrome can be used on most any desktop
While I have been impressed with Linux Mint since I installed it on my older laptop, Iām not sure I see a clear pathway to overtake Windows as the mainstream OS in PCs. I think it will always have its niche, and will likely grow, but I donāt think to the degree this article states. This Windows 10/11 conversion will likely get a decent amount of people interested in learning more about Linux, just so they donāt have to scrap older computers that have no OS support.
I agree the article is a bit exagerated but I do see a shift in usage. most anyone ive seen switch has eventually adopted linux as the primary simply due to its free(mostly) always updated for free, no anti- virus or pc cleaners needed but they are there if one must. Most people go in thinking its way over their head and struggle just because of that notion, when the reality is you live 99% of your time in the browser and with that nothing really changes except instead of running on bloated windows you are driving a new sports car with lotsa speed
True.
But it also means splintering, which is exactly why Linux OSās wonāt become dominant in the foreseeable future.
Mint has 3 āflavorsā. Cinnamon is one of them.
Exactly. I had the Ubuntu Linux O/S installed on an older windows computer after having the hard drive partitioned just to see how it worked and if it was really a viable option to windows. I found adding and using the available limited Linux apps to be a cumbersome process. This system looks like it is trying to combine certain positive attributes of the Mac and Windows systems but with mixed results. I realize Linux developers are volunteering a lot of their time and efforts to make this a viable alternative to windows but there needs to be more focus on making this O/S a lot more user friendly than it currently is, along with a much bigger selection of apps.
My computer is used exclusively for household purposes: occasional word processing, websurfing, handling email and as a Plex server. We are not gamers. So I donāt run into the clunkiness that you wouldā¦
Which leads to a reason that I havenāt thought ofā¦gamers!
Games are designed for Windows, by in large. The splintering of Linux OSās makes it commercially impractical to design games for them.
So I take it running Microsoft word on Linux is a no-go without running some kind of adaptive app like wine. Which means every time I want to read a memo I got to go through a process? Same thing with the Acrobat reader?
Same here. I never have used windows for gaming, just the activities you mention. I found Linux interesting but after a few months of use, decided it is not for me for the reasons I have previously mentioned.
I am the Anti insiderā¦I love Windows, Love Google, Love Gmail, Love Amazon. I am not pissed off that companies are run for profit, am not paranoid, and donāt use a VPNā¦
There is nothing āanti-insiderā about using linux. Its a choice. We all know you love the items stated because you have told us constantly. As far as vpn goes ā¦itās your bridge to jump. Nothing about this thread warranted in your statement.
I tried, really hard,to get into linux, for me it was never quite a replacement for windows.I would love for it to be true competition for windows, but itās just not quite there yet.
I thought I was the only one. Often itās why I donāt reply to stuff. I played around with ubuntu mega years ago around 20 if I remember correctly, and the one thing I disliked was the never ending entering of code to add functionality. I had over 200 pages worth in a diary with more sections than I can remember. Back then the saying was linux is no safer than Win Doze, itās just the hackers canāt be bothered as there arenāt enough using it to make it worth their while. Now Iāve been sucked into the sink hole that is 'droid. And donāt bother, thereās no saving me.
