4k onn plus in Canada

I actually did try this using NordVPN. For some reason Nord has difficulty obtaining IP addresses using a mobile hotspot on Windows 11. I confirmed this with Nord. So instead I installed a free trial of TunnelBear VPN, set up my mobile hotspot on Windows 11 with it and then connected the Onn 4K Plus box to the mobile hotspot and I was able to proceed with the box set up. It is likely that some VPN’s like Nord will cause problems so try a free one if you can.

Right my neighbor had Nord ,we tried first, then tunnel bear, but it wasn’t until we tried in the basement did it work using proton . It would be smart to get the onn pro with ethernet cable. Cheers

Can someone tell me, (I’m in Canada) once I set up the onn4k plus with the von hotspot from a windows computer, I would then install my vpn (Surfshark) onto the box… can I then unplug the box and move it to another tv without having to go the whole factory reset and set up?

@Hgrasby I don’t have any personal experience with an ONN box while in Canada. But my thinking is that if the power goes out in your house, essentially like powering down and moving the box to another TV. So I would think that you shouldn’t have to worry that the initial set up would be gone.
I am absolutely certain that one of the Canadian Insiders will chime in soon, to confirm or tell me that I’m full of baloney .

Once you have it all set up and working in Canada, you can unplug your onn box. Do what you want with it. Reboot, it. You’re fine. You do not have to set it up again. Have a look through here.Plenty of information i have 3 onn 4k pro from the USA and I live in Canada.

good morning, so this is what happened, I set up my onn box on one tv in the bsmt, it worked using a windows pc vpn hotspot (surfshark), I didnt quite finish setting up the box with the remote controling the tv etc, but wifi was connected to hotspot. I did not connect to my home wifi (canada) before I unplugged it, to move it to another room . When I plugged it into another tv, it showed it unsupported regioin again???

Are you connecting to the same (US) servers on your PC VPN network connection and your home wifi VPN connections?

Ya me to , at one point I got a google security alert by covering the box andmy phone hot spot in meatal box . But that’s as far as I got . Want to buy one cheap?

The ONN 4K Plus does not have an ethernet port so it is soloely wireless. Unplugging it will make no difference. Once the box is properly set up male sure you go into settings and turn off Location access. To turn off the location on an Android TV or streaming box, open the Settings menu, go to Privacy or Device Preferences, select Location, and toggle it OFF. You can also restrict location access for individual apps to better protect your privacy.

Hi , with the onn plus setup in the basement windows covered with metal and box covered in metal my wifi off using monitor. The closest I could get was a google alert "new device detected " I could never get near the settings menu. Thanks. Gj.

Thank you! I borrowed a friends windows computer and was able to set it all up… went right to the end of the set up, and I did happen to shut off location … thanks for the re0ly

Hi Miki,

I’m in Canada and would like to set up the google Onn 4k. I’ve searched the posts and they all seem to talk about using a VPN to use it but not step by step instructions. Do you know where i can find those instructions?

PS. I am currently using Nord VPN

Thanks!

Do a google search for unlock region lock an Onn 4K box. I used this video and it worked just fine (note Tunnel Bear has a free trial so when done you can delete it and use a better one like Nord or Surfshark). Note some VPN’s like NordVPN have a hard time establishing an IP address when creating a mobile hotspot . I was using Nord and I contacted their support team and they confirmed this because I was having trouble setting up a mobile hotspot using Windows 11 then switched to Surfshark when finished.
Note the set up must be done wirelessly unless you have a router with a VPN built in that the box plugs into (some people do have this). Once the set up is completed, you can connect the box wirelessly or wired to the internet. Just make sure when you set up the box that you turn “location access” off either during initial set up or in settings once the box is finished the set up process.
