If you have never torrented and don’t even know how to torrent or to install a torrent client to download torrent files I would recommend that you read up on them before even considering getting into torrenting.

Torrents are a method of distributing files over the internet. They operate over the BitTorrent protocol to facilitate what’s called [peer-to-peer (P2P)] file-sharing.

The above contains great info. If this doesn’t answer your questions then use the search and read more threads on torrenting.

Make sure you have a good VPN and Antivirus if you use public torrent sites. This is when your IP provider will come after you for copyright infringement . I would use a APK before you get into torrenting if you have never done this before It’s safer

The official torrentgalaxy site is no longer in use and hasn’t been for some time now. I can’t figure out that this list was populated on 26 Mar and you still included it as a working Torrent site?? Please update

Excellent article as always.

I see here that you recommend IPVanish as an excellent VPN for torrenting.

I’d actually like to see an article in the future about which VPN might work optimally based on your device, such as with a PC, a phone, streamer, etc.

I’m most interested in best VPNs for Firesticks/Fire Cubes. Such as which VPNs have most reliable kill switches, which VPNs have least impact on streaming throughput, etc. I’ve not seen anyone research that detail yet.

I understand that promoting the use of VPNs is necessary as it is an integral part of funding this site through advertising to allow the great content always found here to keep going and insure more great content keeps coming. I have benefited countless times from visiting this forum and the massive amount of helpful and insightful information you provide. But there is one thing that I see not spoken of in many discussions that in the matter of fairness and readers best interests needs to be addressed more and that is Debrids. When we are talking responsible safety and security in torrenting and downloading VPNs are maybe 75% reliable as all still have your IP visible to certain channels and it can still be seen by those willing to look. A Debrid service, which most come with some level of inhouse VPN, is the safest way to download and stream torrents and protect yourself from malicious software. I think maybe its time to do some big articles discussing and explaining different debrid services to inform and educate readers on another if not more important safety device that many are unaware of or fully understand. As always though thanks for the great articles and content, you’re always my number one stop.

Hello CH4Nc3! Thank you for your post.

As it turns out, there have been many discussions, on this site, regarding VPN usage. You would be able to find the discussions if you were to do a search. The magnefying glass, in the upper right corner will open up a search box.

You will find the use/non-use discussed. And sometimes it might edge towards little bit of a heated, but friendly debate on the virtues of use or non-use of VPNs. We do value your opinion, for or against. Anything that you can add to the discussions really helps the knowledge pool here on the site.

Troy does test all of the main VPN providers and ranks them based certain criteria. If you go up to the column in the upper left and tab on “TROYPOINT site” you should be able search for Troy’s recommendations and why he selected the ones in the ranking.

Debrid services have been talked about quite a bit here and many have discussed the benefits of using a premium server service. It has also been mentioned that you don’t need a VPN when using these servers. I do anyway. My VPN is never shut off. There are well over 50 threads on this subject and Troy has a number of tutorials regarding debrid. for example:

Hi Troypoint Insiders,

I’ll begin at the beginning with this one, seeing as I’m pretty much a beginner on this subject matter.

It’s been a while (at least 15 years in fact), since I’ve downloaded torrents from The Pirate Bay website, and even then it was only to download the odd tv/movie/music file.

Since then, I’ve been getting to grips more and more with streaming apps and Kodi on the various different Android devices that I’ve bought and owned since moving away from downloaded content.

However, as much as I enjoy watching my entertainment this way, I do encounter some limitations with regard to the location of content going back some years. Another issue that I’ve encountered, if I’m actually able to locate and view this content, is the poor picture quality and sound that I have to put up with.

In light of this, I’ve decided to venture back into the world of torrenting, to find out whether this can solve the aforementioned problems that I’m facing, in trying to find legacy content which also looks and sounds good.

However, I’ve been faced with a plethora of questions that I’m hoping can be answered by anyone on the forum who have more experience than me with downloading torrents.

Firstly, I believe that I’m fully geared up to enter into the world of The Pirate Bay once more, with an excellent VPN and antivirus in the form of SurfShark and VIPRE respectively.

I’ve also installed the BittorrentWeb client to use with The Pirate Bay, and that’s where I stopped to take stock and find out what to do next, as I was put off by the thought of having to work out which proxy sites of the original were legitimate and which were masquerading as it.

So, this is where I’m at at the moment, which is to take the next step and download torrents for the first time in a while.

By the way, I’ll be using a Mac Mini to delve further into this, once I’ve had some pointers and assistance regarding my query.

Any advice that you could provide, to help me on my way, would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

I think you have it covered a vpn is a def ref torrent files

There are really only 2 things to worry about with torrents in my opinion, 1 always have VPN on and 2 always scan any download BEFORE you open it. Having said that if you do both those every time it doesn’t matter where you download from the “real” site your trying to use like pirate bay (mirrors) or any other torrent sites. Just an aside i only use magnet links instead of torrent files. Kinda the same but a little bit better in my opinion

you will also have to bind your torrent client to your vpn, that way no torrents are ever downloaded if your vpn isn’t on..or if it accidently gets turned off

Thank you all for your helpful advice and guidance. It’s very much appreciated.

Ok, so by the sounds of it, I’ve got the right gear in terms of the VPN and Antivirus, but I’ve discovered that the BitTorrent Web client doesn’t allow for the binding of it to the VPN for whatever reason.

I was going to use it, due to the favourable review it had on Tech Radar, but I’m reluctant to go ahead with doing this now, without firstly going on the advice provided regarding the binding of the client to the VPN, which I feel is important.

Are there any suggestions as to which client will allow me to do this on a Mac Mini M4, and that also comes recommended as being as good as or better than BitTorrent Web?

Regards

I would like to offer two suggestions for you to consider.

1.) qbitorrent for mac. Its been around a long time and has plenty of documentation.

2.) Make a firewall rule so your torrent client cannot connect with the VPN off.

Both suggestions require self-education on your part, which you’ve already been doing.

Good Luck

Thank you Steve Vee for the recommendation.

Although I’ve been doing some of my own research on this, I’d appreciate some clarification on your second point:

2.) Make a firewall rule so your torrent client cannot connect with the VPN off.

Is this the same as what Comtech advises, which is to bind the client to the VPN?

Regards

One other question that I have based on the information that I’ve gleaned from the internet, is about the use of extensions on Firefox.

The advice that was given with one particular search, was to install uBlock Origin, NoScript and Privacy Badger on the browser to protect against anything malicious whilst searching for and downloading torrent files.

Is this overkill to follow this advice on my part, or is it a case of every little helps to protect your computer from getting in harms way?

Regards

i binded qbittorent to surfshark easily and never ever leaks….period!
