Wow, who knew? I didn't. ExpressVPN has a killswitch

Does ExpressVPN have a kill switch?

To block internet connection when your VPN connection drops, just open the ExpressVPN app on your Android device > In settings, go to Network Protection and turn on the “Block internet when unable to connect or reconnect to VPN” option, and that’s it, you’re good to go.Sep 13, 2022

Sure does. Mine is always on

I dont believe this was always a thing with ExpressVPN was it? Is kill switch on AndroidTV and FireTV new?

It’s been there since I started using it June 6, 2022

Hey Guys, not sure that it works. It was there when we did our initial review but it didn’t work. I believe it just comes over from their app on stock Android where it does work.

I guess the only way to be sure is if someone actually has it on a FireTV device to confirm.

I’ve been having some issues of late on my Nvidia Shield Pro where I run Kodi and when I come out I notice that my Express VPN is not connected. So their “kill switch” hasn’t been working.

So I dug deeper and I notice in their documentation that the Kill Switch functionality does not work for Android TV. New to me. And no workarounds or alternatives mentioned.

Is anyone else aware of this? It’s hard to imagine a top tier VPN product not offering this functionality for Android TV.

I just ran it by my Gemini AI and it agreed that Express VPN does not offer a kill switch for Android TV.

I’ve setup the Monitor Dot for now but I don’t want to be paying for a product that doesn’t offer one of the most important features.

So I went straight to ExpressVPN live support and showed them a screenshot of your post and asked, is this true? I’ll post screenshots of our conversation. Personally I’m clueless :see_no_evil_monkey:

Well, wrong order but I’m sure everyone can figure it out. I warned, I’m clueless

Just a small difference. Yes it may work for Android but apparently it’s specifically an Android TV issue. This is from Express.

Limitations:
The Android system-level setting for blocking internet traffic when VPN drops is not available on Android TV, which could potentially lead to data leaks if the VPN disconnects.

Internet kill switch vs Android system settings

While ExpressVPN’s internet kill switch gives sufficient protection to your online traffic, you can enable a setting via the Android system settings that gives you full data protection. However, this setting will block access to local devices. This setting is also not available on Android TVs and Fire TVs.

Last sentence talks to Android TVs and Fire TVs.

What a shady business practice that is. Maybe if the darn thing doesn’t work on Android TV they should remove it from the app instead of showing the setting for it and allowing someone to turn it on, that’s totally deceptive. I’m sure they could remove it since the same version of the app has slightly different UI on different devices. Not impressed  but thanks @MGB123 for that enlightening info.:+1:
