Debating on getting a router to use with VPN. Couple questions in hoping to have cleared up. First how does speed compare to using a VPN app? Second what happens if the VPN connection drops? Does it go back to my real ip or does it work like a kill switch? Thank you in advance for any help.

I would say it really depends on the device you get for use, and the vpn provider itself as well as the vpn protocol. Wireguard works very good. I have router level vpn using wireguard protocol and notice very little difference in speed inside the vpn compared to outside.
