VPN Restrictions

There are some websites that I need to visit that will not let me access them unless I turn off the VPN. Then when I am finished, I turn the VPN back on. I would like to setup my VPN on my router, but then I would have to turn off the VPN on the router whenever I wanted to access one of these websites. This would mean that all devices are now exposed and not just the device that I am using to access this website.
Is there a way to setup exceptions for the VPN for certain websites on the router setup (something like split tunneling)?

All depends on the router and the vpn. I use an asus router with 3rd party firmware(merlin) to manage my router/vpn. You can assign devices a vpn or not. Or you can just turn it off and back on with a click. For intance I have my android boxes on one vpn connection and my pc on another, same goes for my phone etc. So you can do as you want provided you have the resources.

I am using a netgear nighthawk R7000 router. It does allow VPN setup, but I do not see where I can restrict certain websites.

I cant really speak to netgear but with asus they refer to it as VPN Director. That is where I can tell the router where I want vpn traffic or not.

I did watch this tutorial. It addresses the AsusWRT router but not the Netgear Nighthawk router. But I didn’t see anything in the article that addresses setting up a website exception. I may have to do alot more research before changing my setup. Thanks for all the help and advice.

another option is using a browser vpn extension for quick access.

If you want more control over the vpn id suggest installing them on your device rather than the router for easy access to split tunnel and off on capabilities.

Depending on your vpn im on surfshark go into vpn settings look for bypass this will allow you to add websites or apps that you dont want to go through your vpn.other vpns might have something simler.so check your settings

Thanks Dracoo! That’s what I do now.

I have subscriptions to IP Vanish and NordVPN. I have attached to my WiFi a mac desktop, iphone, ipad, 2 MeCool KM2s, and 2 Firestick 4Ks. I currently use individual VPN on each device. My WiFi is a Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

Most VPNs I’ve used it’s the "Split tunneling " option, but I won’t use it as I never stream or surf anywhere on my Firestick unless it’s through a vpn for security.

I use split tunneling also on my Firesticks with IP Vanish. I have no problem with my setup on each of my seven different types of devices. It is looking at one setup on my WiFi to replace individual device settings that seems to be the problem.
