VPN Dots not working correctly

When you disconnect the vpn and the killswitch is on, do you have internet? Are you able to send or receive with the killswitch on? If, in fact, your VPN is shut off or force closed and is not active then your killswitch isn’t on.

Yes, internet works fine

Yes

Doesn’t seem to matter. If killswitch is on, and VPN is turned off, green dots remain on.

I wish I was there on your device because your answers make no sense. If the VPN is in fact disconnected and turned off then the killswitch won’t work as it is run by the VPN program. If you think your killswitch is working then you can’t send or receive. Active killswitch, active vpn. But you seem to have your system working the way you want so that’s a plus. I’m outta here. ttfn.

The original FREE VPN Safety Dot still works as good as it did before!

I use it every single day and have absolutely NO issues with it!

But you guys do as you want. I think this whole thread is a little silly. After all, we are ONLY talking about an indicator to let you know whether you VPN is on or not. For years the only way I knew my VPN was on was because I turned it on! This VPN Safety Dot is more or less a novelty for me. I know EXACTLY when my VPN is on or not all the time regardless of any dot!

My system is fine. It does this on 3 firesticks. The common factor is Surfshark. I think there’s an issue with the way these dots poll the surfshark VPN (and get it wrong).

Well, that’s your opinion.

Yes, it is and I stand by it!

I have SS and use the VPN Safety Dot with no issues EVER!

Maybe, maybe not. I didn’t have any of these issues with VPNSD until very recently.

Ditch the dot, use vpn and activate the kill switch. The kill switch is what you need to know if your vpn is active, and really once its on it doesn’t just shut down without manual intervention.

Dear @Powerfader : Security is never Silly! I have read posts on Troypoint from users who think VPNs are unnecessary and others try to run two at the same time. Peace of mind comes to many of us through VPN usage. If Peace of Mind comes from using a kill switch only or a safety dot is better, both are correct for that individual user, but neither are silly.

Running 2 vpns is very silly… this user is using a kill switch vpn, Don’t really need the green dot with that active. Also nobody is sure why he is having issues as it works for everyone els. Typically that means user error.

Yes, @TP-Dracoo , running two VPNs is silly. You miss my point. Security on an individual basis was the issue. I had the same issue as the original question and posted how I fixed the problem in an earlier post.

Well, it’s certainly not user error - there’s nothing really to error on! I have three firesticks (in one location - four at a different location and state) with 1/2 doz apps on each including Surfshark and one of the various dots (I’ve used VPNSD free, VPBPD and VPNMD on all of them). I’ve been using the Firesticks in their various configurations for over 8 years and have a pretty good handle on how to use them and the apps that can be sideloaded on them.

There’s something going on here and all I can say is turn on one of the dots, turn on Surfshark VPN and Killswitch and then turn off the VPN and see if the dot turns red.

Next stem is to wipe one of the firesticks (that was done recently but I’ll do it again) and install just Surfshark and the dots,

What you have NOW is “VPN Monitor Dot” (red square/green square) … NOT "VPN Privacy Dot (red triangle/green globe)!
You should have the choice of activating one or the other from your ‘Apps and Channels’ page.

NOTE: Neither of these work properly on my Android phone without major bugs, so I am still using the ‘basic’ version of “VPN Safety Dot” on it … though this now 'times out after so many minutes (with a big pop-up message).
I have to go back to the app and reselect ‘basic’ to turn it back on. This is a PITA and will likely be taken away as an option at some point, but unfortunately the two new ones are problematic and only work properly on my FireStick 4K.

You got me wrong. I use a vpn almost 100% of the time. I really don’t need the VPN Safety Dot just to have a visual of my vpn is on or not. I know it is on because I turned it on. Besides, as Dracoo pointed out the Kill Switch would come into play if I ever dropped my vpn coverage, which btw, has never happened.

Also, using SS it already has an indicator icon showing that my vpn is active on my phone and tablet. I hope one day they would include that little feature for the android streaming device and the laptop. Then the dot becomes a moot issue.

Btw, I am not so certain that the SS icon appears or not on my smart TV. I run everything through my nvidia pro. So, not certain if the icon shows up or not.

Never-the-less, I know my vpn is connected or not 100% of the time. I like the dot as a novelty and that I changed the appearance the dot to something I made, and that really is the only reason I have the dot…just for the fun of it. lol

I used the Downloader code that was supposed to be the Privacy Dot, but suspected what you explained. This one seems to work anyway…just not consistently. I rebooted device and it was red, but later, SS kill switch stopped connection and it was still green. Oh well, a false sense of security is still a sense of security lol.

Then, you should use the VPN Master app…

Then it’s doing exactly as it should. As I’ve said countless times before. If the kill switch activates and the dot remains green then your VPN is working and you’re safe and the dot remains green as it should.
Happy New Year.
