Using VPN with fiber optic internet only

We recently installed a fiber optic provider for internet only – no content. Supposed to be getting 1 GIG but not even close with the router they provided (guess I can’t name it). Anyway, if there is no content being provided, is the use of a VPN still necessary? This provider is not going to be making content available, so my location is of no importance to them and they have no reason to throttle the download. Or do they? I’m on Firesticks for three devices, using Surfshark. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That’s an odd way for an internet provider to describe their service. I have a 150Mbps down from my ISP and do not subscribe to any of their streaming services and I have fibre. When subscribing to an internet service they get your money for “layered” services. Including a modem/router that they charge rent for, streaming channels with a set top box, and internet phone, to name a few. So I only pay for my “connection” to the internet and do not have any “content” from my ISP. It’s all up to you.
Now to directly answer your question, and this is my opinion, as I use their “connection” to the internet, and often cannot verify exactly who and where I am connecting to, I most certainly use a VPN. If not then my connection is much easier to “snoop” on, allowing identity theft and potential hacking of my “open” system, not to mention allowing my ISP to see exactly what I’m doing and logging that activity, for whomever gets authorization to see it. Some say I’m paranoid, and I could care less. Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t out to get me.

I totally agree with Miki. Its best to use VPN, definitely when using 3rd party apps. I have fiber optics internet as well, but my speeds are no way as high as Miki’s. I average around 75-90 using a VPN. I just need to stream without buffering, which only need speeds as high as 35mbps.

I agree I always have my VPN on and feel it’s definitely needed for streaming with 3rd party apps and so on :v::sunglasses:
