Updating Onn 4k Plus box in Canada

Hi!

I use an Onn 4k Plus I bought at Walmart here in Canada. The device works beautifully.

It’s running on OS 12. When I try to do updating, it stays at 12. I know the same boxes in the USA are working with systems higher than 12.

Is it possible to get this box to update itself to an OS higher than 12 and if so, how to do it?

I don’t think you have a 4K Plus, they came with 14 from the start, unless the Canada versions were different. From my experience, if it came with 14 keep it, if it came with 12 and you update to 14 that is when the issues seem to start. Stay at 12 as long as you can, the newest os isn’t always the best, and you can’t go back once you update.

Thanks Dave,

Yup, I’m in Canada and as I mentioned before, box is from Walmart here.

Apparently, the Onn here come with OS 12 and unlike the ones south of the border which either start as 12 and get upgraded to either 13 or 14, they don’t do any upgrades.

However, I did hear before that some if not all boxes running 14 had some problems so, it’s all for the better that I’m locked on 12!

Hi, I’m in Canada also. I bought the lastest ONN 4k box last month from Walmart. I did the requested upgrade when I turned it on. Configured it on a Sunday, everything was fine; next day all was fine, I was quite pleased, Now came day 3 and the box said it couldn’t connect to the internet, huh? I’ve worked in IT, so I knew to what to do to to supposedly get it reconnected. It was connected to my network but kept saying no internet connection. I have 4 older boxes which I still had around and they all connected to the internet with no problem. I even did a factory reset on the ONN box but it still displayed the same issue. I had an Android box many years ago that wouldn’t connect to the internet, so I knew this was a permanent problem. I packed up the ONN box and returned it to Walmart. Not putting up with that issue at that price. Not buying another ONN box, not impressed.

Sorry to read you had problems with your Onn box. Assuming you tried every diagnostic in the bóok, yes I can say that box you got was a lemon.

Normally they are very reliable. If I were you, I would have taken another one when I returned it and tried again. The odds of getting 2 lemons in a row are very slim.

One last thing, you said you were from Canada. If you got the box from a Walmart south of the border, then there is a possibility their boxes are zoned from working in Canada.

Good luck with whatever you are using now

The ONN box was bought here in Canada at a Walmart right near my house. Odd that it worked quite fine for 2 days, then it didn’t. Thought it could have been an issue when it was assembled. Still, I returned it. Reminded me of my Me Cool Google boxes, however I never had an issue with them.
