Ugoos SK1 Android Box Review 128GB Storage & 8GB RAM

64 bit has advantages, but I agree most streaming apps probably can’t really make use of those advantages.

The major apps that can take advantage now would be Kodi running a heavy skin with widgets etc and gaming and emulators. Most Kodi users these days seem to run relatively light builds that just stream from debrids and the Android gaming community is small.

With that being the situation along with Google evidently placing a lower priority on 64bit development(I believe Ken from Minix) I can see why the manufactures don’t place a priority on it. At least the Buzz Powerstation is available for those wanting to be on the bleeding edge.

I’m sure 64bit will slowly gain traction and be at the forefront, it just isn’t there yet.

I appreciate my 64 bit OS, not for gaming, but because of the more efficient processing by 64 bit apps and also appreciate the added security of them. 64 bit wasn’t designed just for gaming. I personally notice a difference and I certainly don’t game. Once again, to each their own.

64bit was designed for high end technical computing and something not needed for streaming.
High end gaming, multitasking, video editing, CGI definitely.

True it isn’t needed for streaming but so much isn’t if it’s just basics you want. I love the improved streaming I get as well as the many benefits of 64 bit apps. I also have a LAN server set up and that also works much smoother. Many who have gone the 64 bit route also claim less buffering, but I can’t testify to that as I haven’t used their setup. Not to mention future proofing. I’m going to back out yet again as we have differing opinions and I won’t sway you nor you me. I am all about learning and moving forward to the future possibilities.

Funnily enough a user recently on the Ugoos telegram asked the question.
“Sk1 and am8 pro, who is the best?”
This was one user’s reply.

I do not have the SK1 but I bought the AM8B pro a couple weeks ago. I bought it for the extra ports and especially the micro sd slot. I use it for hours per day for web browsing, streaming, gaming and so far it works fast and I have no issues. I have a UT8 Pro which is a 64 bit system and it is a great box. I thought the AM8 pro might be slower for multi tasking because of it being a 32 bit system but it does everything even faster than the UT8 PRO. I even tested it with 23 open apps including 4 web browsers all open at the same time while also streaming a movie with vlc picture in picture and I was able to switch apps extremely fast for hours with no lag. It’s a great box. I’m using it right now to type this lol.

Looks like I underestimated 32bit os but then again I wouldn’t use my device in the way that the user is using theirs tbh.

Like you I never fully understood the benefits and advantages of a 64 bit streamer. Now I do I won’t go back. It’s all about the learning and future possibilities and the speed, well lets just say I’ve never experienced such a fast and smooth system. Yes I’ve had 64 bit boxs but they could only use 32 bit apps. Huge dif with using 64 bit apps. Always more to understand and to exercise the mind. Remember when the Commodore 64 came out and we said we would never need more than 64KB of memory? Now look at us. :wink:Happy easter everyone.

lol well…remember the original nintendo 8 bit system? It was like the best thing in home video gaming systems. then came 16 bit sega etc…then 32 bit and then 64 bit 3d gaming. Now I don’t claim to be a bit specialist, but more bits tend to enable more things and better graphics etc. so the more bits the better for me lol

Can’t we just go back to arguing about KODI vs Stremio? That was much more fun than this 32 bit vs 64 bit nerdfest

Lol. Absolutely @MarkxG . This has gotten boring anyway. On the up side I really enjoy the huge variety of options available for configuration on the SK1. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter weekend.

I decided to take the dive and ordered the SK1 for a fall/winter project. @TXRon , @PapaS and @sim_bill along with others have always talked very highly of Ugoos, I want to see what the hype is for myself. Not that I’m panicking about the Google TV news, but made me realize that literally all of my boxes are Android/Google TV. I think it is in my best interest to hop out of that to regular Android, and safeguard myself in that way. Plus, I’m excited about even more customizable options on this box, and the amazing specs that it has. And, what a great looking box! I will keep you all updated when I will be receiving this, and how it goes after that. FYI, these are $208(+ tariff) on the ugoos.store website, so that helped my decision. If I remember right, I thought these were normally $240-$275 before.

I’m sure you will love it.

The most important choice is what launcher you want. Of course, Projectivy is popular, but it is easy to use whatever you prefer. Ugoos includes Launcher3 that is air mouse based and ULauncher which is directional pad based and is much like the old AndroidTV before ads took over. Whichever you prefer the only time you really need to use the air mouse is in the Play Store to ease navigation sometimes.

I’ll put ATV Launcher Pro on it, hopefully.

Carrying on the earlier comments 32bit v 64 bit, looks like both Android tv / Google TV and android 12 onward are moving to 64bit os.

App devs will start moving to 64bit as well.

Received my box today! It was in the mailbox when I went home for lunch. Just enough time to hook it up to the TV, connect to internet, and then have to come back to work. :frowning: I will play with it this weekend, and update with my thoughts. My initial thought just feeling the box is how well put together it feels. It is definitely heavier than the Shield Pros and pretty much all other boxes I have ever held in my hand.

It is very well put together. The heat sink is huge and the casing looks great. Only sign of caution is there are only cooling vents on the bottom of the casing so you should consider getting a USB fan to use on the bottom of the box to keep it cool.

Per your recommendation @sim_bill , its very own fan!

Nice. I used 2 of them under my SK1 also. I got adventurous and took off the top of the box, remove the motherboard and drilled some holes in the side to further improve ventilation.
