Trying to connect Critical X8 1TB SSD drive to ONN 4k box

So I was just in the US and swung by a Wal Mart and picked up the ONN 4K box as a secondary/travelling solution. I also wanted to take advantage of using Ethernet instead of wifi and I am trying to connect a Crucial X8 1TB USB drive but I’m hitting a wall on the last thing.

Here is what I have

  • ONN 4k device
  • OTG cable to allow USB to be connected
  • A powered USB hub with 4 ports
  • A TP-Link USB 3.0 to RJ 45 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter
  • A Crucial X8 Portable SSD 1TB USB 3.0 drive

I followed Troy’s excellent videos on setting up the ONN box.

I found that I needed to format my new drive to Fat32 so I did so on my Chromebook. I then ejected the drive successfully.

The problem is, whenever I add it to my powered USB hub and make sure the port is lit, I see the drive listed under storage but underneath it says “ is safely ejected”.

Nothing changes it. Rebooting the box, turning the port off and on, using a different port.

And also, I have ensure that USB debugging is off under Developer options.

Has anyone encountered something similar? When I formatted the drive on my chromebook as Fat32, I was able to access it normally.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Troy has mentioned many times in his expanded storage videos how he limits the size of drive to like 64gb (I believe is what he mentions). Larger than that he hasn’t had consistent luck with the expansion.

just as a test try turning off usb debugging and/or dev options

So are we saying that external storage is only meant to offload apps so they don’t use internal storage? I was hoping to be able to record content from Tivimate and store other video content on the external drive. 64GB isn’t going to store much.

And to answer @TXRon , I did turn off USB debugging and restarted the box before I tried adding in the storage.

Are there any specs about max sizes and types of storage that can be added? I’ve looked all over and I can’t find anything.

Thanks for the replies.

To be honest these boxes are so picky now days due to googles “security” they are dam near locked down. Only the top boxes engineered with a streamers mindset set boxes up correctly for streamers. To me the best way is external storage powered by a server, pc or heck another android box and use file transfer to store the files.
