You can go through all the apps and delete the cache (and, on some, the data too). That may give you some time. But I’ve found it’s best to reset to factory specs every 6-12 months to get back all of the storage taken by download and update junk you can’t delete.
If Amazon would stop “hard coding” their apps, like Amazon Photos, Amazon Live Shopping, and Amazon Kids (apps that I NEVER use) and allow the user to uninstall these apps, you could free-up more than 100 MB of space. This is an Amazon issue.
Yes, that stuff really annoys me too,
I have storage on my Firesticks and put everything I can on USB, MiXplore will put most app on USB but update don’t happen on USB, another Amazon feature.
So when I do my Update cycle I always kill all of the Amazon stuff and clear cache and data. Which has become harder as I can’t seem to hide all the Amazon Free links under apps.
Sorry guys, saw @keebler message and a rant slipped out.
Please tell me how to do or find this. I have 32 and 64 gig flash drives to fill. Sorry, posted in wrong place.
Ron, I don’t know what “this” is:
Add storage? (Troy has videos as well as Tanya and TDUK)
Move apps with MiXplore? (TDUK has a video about MiXplore, “Firestick Storage Issue Fixed! -Move EVERY APP to USB” you can find it on his site just search for “Move Apps” and scroll down untill you see the title)
Update Apps? (The TDUK video will show you using MiXplore)
Updating is done by moving the app from USB to internal storage (use Firestick App Manager), update under the Apps menu, the option menu let’s you install update, then use MiXplore to uninstall, copy, and install back to USB.
Other file system apps will move some MiXplore will move most.
Amazon installed apps that are part of the FireTV OS can’t be moved to USB.
It is a pain in the arse to do. I know of no easier way.
If I got it all wrong, ask again.
Okay, maybe I’m dense. I have Mixplore does no good without ADB.
Do you have another way? Not a tech so hopefully not too much.
I attempted to to cover the three things I thought you might be referring to as “this” when you asked how to do “this”.
They were, install USB storage, move between internal and external (USB) storage and update apps that are currently on USB.
I didn’t know which operation you were referring to so I attempted to briefly cover all three, if I miss interrupted the original question, I am willing to try again.
To answer this question😊:
MiXplore is just a file system app.
It doesn’t require the use of ADB.
To update an app that is installed on a Firestick’s USB storage you first have to move it to internal storage, update it then install it back to the USB stick.
You can do that with MiXplore or some other file system app that will let you install. I just find that MiXplore can move most apps to USB.
The process is
- move app to be updated to internal storage
- update app.
At this point you have the updated app installed on the Firesticks internal storage, we now have to get it to the external (USB) storage.
- now copy the installed app to a different folder (download) which will create an .APK file (MiXplore does this when you copy an app)
The next step is not very intuitive, that’s why I included the TDUK video. You select the .APK file and select uninstall, this doesn’t do anything to the .APK file but uninstall the app from internal storage.
- uninstall the app (MiXplore)
You now reinstall the app using the .APK file you created which will cause it to be installed on the USB storage.
-
install the APK file
-
delete the APK file from the download directory to recover room.
(It’s the same principle as when you delete the APK file after installing with downloader.)
None of the above requires ADB however you could do it all with ADB but it would be lot of typing.
EDIT: in the above I referred to the USB storage as external and the Firestick storage as internal storage, the reference was to distinguish between the two locations only. USB storage for storing and using apps on the Firestick is FORMATTED as internal storage.
Something like this or similar have been working great for me. I also connect my Bluetooth keyboard to this as well. UGREEN USB 3.0 Hub Ethernet Adapter 10 100 1000 Gigabit Network Converter with 3 USB 3.0 Ports
