🛑 SmartTube App Compromised!

The SmartTube ad-free YouTube app has been compromised.

Here is quote from developer.

Important Announcement

Friends, it seems that my digital signature has been exposed. This signature protects the app from fake and malicious updates, so there is a risk that someone may try to release counterfeit versions under my name.

To completely eliminate any threats, I’ve decided to stop using the current signature and switch to a new one. Because of this, the app’s identifier will also change. You don’t need to delete the old app (but it will no longer receive updates) — the new one will install as a separate app and will need to be configured again.

Thank you for your understanding and attention to security.

If you are currently using SmartTube you should completely uninstall.

I have already added the new SmartTube stable release to the TROYPOINT Toolbox so once you have uninstalled, you can do a fresh install through our Toolbox.

APK updater should pick it up to change versions.

I still have the last version and it works fine so do I still need to update?

I just uninstalled but now I can not reinstall as I am getting a URL error in the toolbox? Any help would be appreciated.

Does this also apply to tizen tube?

Thanks Troy. Just did this on four devices and worked perfectly.

Hello, if using a VPN try disabling that temporarily. Also, try rebooting your device if that doesn’t work.

No, two different applications.

If the update button doesn’t cause an error you are probably good.

I backed up to Drive and was able to update from there

If you read and understood the message it is that the key has been compromised. Malicious activity might happen. If you want to keep that risk alive on your system then have at it. But the advice is to uninstall and reinstall the app with the updated secure version.

Correct me if I’m wrong but from my understanding you’ll need to reconfigure the new version. Backups won’t restore due to app signatures not matching.

My MeCool device automatically uninstalled it yesterday. Went straight to the toolbox and re-installed it and logged back in via google account and worked perfect. Google TV, I had to uninstall and login myself.

Just did mine. Thanks Troy!

I backup SmartTube Beta to Google Drive. My last backup was made a few versions before the “compromised” 30.51. I installed Beta 30.56 and successfully restored settings from Drive. You will have to go through the Google authentication procedures again, but it does work.

Note: This was done before uninstalling version 30.51!

I use the SmartTube app and log in. And have all my recommended and saved videos at ease. I think if you go to Albania on VPN you probably can’t do that. I don’t even use a VPN on my Smart Tube app. And have had no problems as if I was watching the regular YouTube app without the commercials with better control of the app settings with smart tube app.

Thanks for the update. Just uninstalled the old version and reinstalled the new one from toolbox. Took about 5 minutes to get it back to how it was. Might be just me but this actually seems to be running better than the last version.
