The best thing to do is get a wifi modem from your isp, if not asus and tp link are probably your best choices.

Many ISP-provided modem/routers lock you out of any control over the device. If you need to alter any settings, you’re probably better off having the modem bridged when you get it and using a separate router.

I think that’s situational. As long as you have the login info into the modem you should be able to do anything you can as if you where on a router.
But you are not wrong.
